Skin fungal infections in caecilians are caused by microscopic fungi that attack the skin. Caecilians are limbless burrowing amphibians that resemble large worms and live buried in moist soil or water depending on the species.

Their skin is very thin and permeable, playing an essential role in respiration and exchange with the environment. It is therefore particularly vulnerable to fungal infection, especially in captivity where hygiene and humidity conditions are sometimes poorly controlled.

This condition remains poorly documented in scientific literature due to the discreet and uncommon nature of these animals in captive care, but it is recognized by exotic animal specialists as an important cause of death in captivity.

Causes and risk factors

Skin fungal infections are caused by microscopic fungi naturally present in the environment (soil, water, substrate) that become pathogenic when the skin's natural defenses are weakened.

Several families of fungi may be involved, including filamentous fungi (such as certain Fusarium or Aspergillus species) and fungi similar to those responsible for related diseases in other amphibians.

These microorganisms take advantage of damaged skin, excessive stagnant moisture, or chronic stress to become established and multiply.

Several factors increase the risk of fungal infection in caecilians: poor quality water or substrate, excessive stagnant humidity, inadequately cleaned terrarium, temperature unsuitable for the species, chronic stress from handling or cohabitation, and any pre-existing skin injury that creates a pathway for fungal entry.

A weakened immune system from another disease or inadequate diet is also a contributing factor.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis is challenging because caecilians often burrow and hide symptoms until disease is advanced. The veterinarian with exotic animal experience first examines the skin and behavior, along with terrarium conditions (temperature, humidity, substrate quality, and water quality). Skin samples are taken through scraping or swabbing to observe fungi under the microscope, and may be cultured to identify the fungal species. In some cases, a skin biopsy is recommended to assess lesion depth and rule out other skin diseases.

Treatment

Treatment relies on topical or systemic antifungal medications prescribed by the veterinarian, tailored to the animal's response and the identified fungal species. Medicated baths may be used under strict veterinary supervision, as caecilian skin is highly permeable and sensitive to certain products. At the same time, correcting terrarium conditions (water quality, humidity, substrate cleanliness) is essential for treatment success and preventing relapse. Antibiotics may be added if bacterial infection of the lesions occurs.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is based primarily on strict management of the captive environment. Water quality and substrate must be maintained to a high standard, with regular terrarium cleaning and removal of organic waste. Temperature and humidity should be suited to the specific species kept, as imbalances encourage fungal growth. Avoiding overcrowding, limiting stressful handling, and quarantining any new animal before adding it to an existing terrarium are also important measures. A varied, balanced diet helps maintain good overall immune function.

Possible complications

Without treatment, infection can spread deeper into subcutaneous tissue and lead to septicemia (generalized infection) as fungi and opportunistic bacteria enter the bloodstream. Since skin is the primary respiratory organ in many caecilians, extensive skin involvement can seriously compromise gas exchange and be fatal. Secondary bacterial infections are common on fungal lesions.

Prognosis

The outlook depends largely on how early the infection is caught. When fungal infection is detected at an early stage and remains localized, it usually responds well to treatment.

However, when lesions are widespread or the infection has reached deeper tissues, the outlook becomes guarded to poor, especially because of the vital role the skin plays in respiration in these animals.

Recurrence is possible if the husbandry conditions that caused the problem are not corrected permanently.
