This disease, well known in other amphibians and reptiles as mouth rot, also affects caecilians kept in captivity, especially when housing conditions are not adequate. It causes lesions, redness, and sometimes pus around the mouth, making eating difficult and painful.

Owners may notice redness or irritated areas around the animal's mouth. Small sores, pus, or a whitish to yellowish coating may appear on the gums or inside the mouth. The animal may refuse to eat due to pain, become more lethargic than usual, and show progressive weight loss. In advanced cases, jaw deformity or an unusual odor may be noticeable.

Causes and risk factors
Infectious stomatitis in caecilians is most often caused by opportunistic bacteria (notably Gram-negative bacilli such as Aeromonas or Pseudomonas) that take advantage of a weakened immune system or a small wound in the mouth to multiply. Fungi may sometimes be involved, either alone or alongside bacteria. These agents are often already present in the aquatic environment or substrate without causing disease in a healthy animal.
The main risk factors are poor water or substrate quality, unsuitable environmental conditions (temperature, humidity), chronic stress, a pre-existing mouth wound, inappropriate diet, or an immune system weakened by another disease. Overcrowding in the same enclosure also increases transmission between individuals.
Transmission
Direct transmission between individuals is poorly documented in caecilians, but it is likely through contact with contaminated water or substrate, particularly when animals share the same terrarium. The bacteria responsible are generally opportunistic germs already present in the environment rather than strictly contagious agents.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on clinical observation of mouth lesions by a veterinarian specialising in exotic animals. A sample taken from the lesions (swab or biopsy) allows laboratory analysis (bacterial culture, sometimes fungal testing) to identify the responsible agent and guide treatment. Any new caecilian should be quarantined and observed before being placed with others.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can spread to deep jaw tissues, cause bone destruction, generalise throughout the body (septicaemia) and lead to death. Difficulty eating caused by mouth pain can also result in severe weight loss and general weakening of the animal.

Prognosis

However, if the infection is advanced or has already affected bone or other organs, the prognosis becomes much more guarded, particularly given that this species is poorly studied in veterinary medicine, which sometimes complicates treatment.
