Cutaneous parasitism of the sloth bear includes several skin conditions caused by tiny mites that live in or on the skin of the animal.\nThe best known is mange, caused by a mite digging galleries under the skin.\nOther mites can also colonize the coat or hair follicles without digging galleries.\nThis disease affects both wild bears and those living in captivity, zoological park or conservation center.\nIt can remain discreet at first then gradually get worse if nothing is done.

Weakened, young, old or already sick bears are more susceptible to a severe infestation.\nPromiscuity in captivity, a poorly maintained enclosure or one shared with many conspecifics increases the risk of contamination.\nAn immune system weakened by stress, chronic illness or an unsuitable diet favors the establishment and worsening of parasitism.\nContact with other wild or domestic species carrying similar mites can also play a role.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly by direct contact between an infested bear and a healthy animal, particularly during social contact or cohabitation in an enclosure.\nIt can also occur indirectly via a soiled environment: bedding, floor, trunks or objects contaminated by recently detached mites.\nThe risk increases in captivity when several animals share the same restricted space.\nSome of these mites can occasionally be transmitted to humans in close contact with an infested animal, causing an transient skin irritation in humans.
