Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in wild birds such as wagtails. Small worms lodge in the intestines or crop and disrupt digestion. This disease mainly affects young birds, weakened birds, or those living in damp environments where parasites thrive easily. It often goes unnoticed at first but can become serious if the bird is already in poor health.

Signs are often subtle at first. The bird may seem less active, with ruffled feathers and lack of energy. Diarrhea or abnormal droppings are common. Over time, the bird loses weight despite sometimes retaining appetite, as the worms absorb some of the nutrients. In young birds, stunted growth or a slightly swollen abdomen may be observed. In advanced cases, worms may be visible in the droppings.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms), particularly species from the genera Capillaria, Ascaridia, or Syngamus, which colonize the digestive tract or sometimes the trachea. Eggs from these parasites are shed in droppings and contaminate soil, water, or insects that the bird eats.
Young wagtails, with less developed immunity, are more vulnerable. A damp, muddy environment or one rich in contaminated insects promotes transmission. Close contact with other birds carrying parasites, environmental stress, or poor nutrition also increase risk. Birds admitted to wildlife rehabilitation centers or raised in captivity may be more exposed if hygiene standards are inadequate.
Transmission
Infection occurs by ingesting worm eggs present in contaminated surroundings, or by eating insects such as earthworms or invertebrates that carry infective larvae.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian or wildlife specialist looks for parasite eggs through microscopic examination of droppings (faecal flotation). In some cases, direct observation of worms in faeces or during a full clinical examination helps guide the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment relies on giving antiparasitic medication suited to birds, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian experienced in wildlife medicine. Nutritional support and rehydration may accompany treatment in weakened birds.

Prevention
Good hygiene in feeding and housing areas (in wildlife care centres or aviaries) limits contamination. Avoiding overcrowding and prolonged contact with damp, soiled ground also reduces the risk. Regular parasite screening in rescued or captive birds allows early detection.
Possible complications
Heavy untreated infestation can lead to dehydration, severe weight loss, anaemia, or intestinal blockage. In young birds or already weakened individuals, the outcome may be fatal without prompt care.

The bird appears lethargic with ruffled feathers and stays still. Worms are visible in the droppings. The bird is losing weight or not growing normally despite eating. Diarrhoea has persisted for several days.
Prognosis
The outlook is favourable if treatment starts early, especially in young, well-nourished birds. Without treatment, infestation can worsen and threaten survival, particularly in weakened individuals or those in care centres.
