Canary pox virus is a contagious viral disease caused by a poxvirus specific to canaries and certain other passerines. It affects the skin and sometimes the respiratory tract of the bird. This infection can develop in a mild cutaneous form or in a more serious diphtheroid form, affecting the mucous membranes and the respiratory system.\n\nThe virus belongs to the avian poxvirus family, close but distinct from that responsible for avian pox in chickens. It is not transmitted to humans or mammals.

Two main forms exist in the canary.\n\nThe cutaneous form manifests itself by small nodules or spots on areas without feathers: legs, around the beak, eyelids. These nodules can develop into scabs which eventually fall off.\n\nThe diphtheroid form, more severe, affects the mucous membranes of the mouth, pharynx and sometimes the eyes. It causes whitish or yellowish deposits, swelling of the eyelids, discharge from the eyes and nose, and respiratory difficulty which can become significant.\n\nIn both cases, the sick bird often appears depressed, eats less and may lose weight. The plumage becomes dull and ruffled.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by a poxvirus (DNA virus) specific to canaries, called canarypox virus. This virus infects cells of the skin and mucous membranes, leading to the formation of characteristic lesions.

Raising outdoors or in aviaries exposed to mosquitoes presents an increased risk, especially in hot and humid periods conducive to insects. Promiscuity between birds, the introduction of new subjects without quarantine, and a weakened immune system (young birds, stressed or sick birds) increase susceptibility to infection.

Transmission

The virus is transmitted mainly by biting insects, notably mosquitoes, which act as mechanical vectors between infected and healthy birds. Direct transmission between birds is possible through contact with skin lesions, contaminated scabs or soiled equipment (feeders, cages, litter). Skin wounds make it easier for the virus to enter.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The avian veterinarian makes the diagnosis based on the observation of typical skin or mucous membrane lesions, supplemented if necessary by laboratory analyzes (search for the virus, histological examination of the lesions). The appearance of the nodules and their location on the featherless areas strongly guide the diagnosis.

Treatment

There is no specific antiviral treatment. The treatment is mainly supportive: local care for skin lesions, antibiotic treatment in the event of bacterial secondary infection, and comfort measures to support the weakened bird (warmth, easier feeding). Immediate isolation of the sick bird is essential to limit the spread.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

The fight against mosquitoes and other biting insects is the most important preventive measure: mosquito nets on aviaries, elimination of stagnant water nearby.\n\nThe systematic quarantine of any new bird before introduction into a breeding facility helps limit the introduction of the virus. Regular cleaning and disinfection of equipment and cages also reduces the risk of direct transmission.\n\nA vaccine exists and is used in certain farms, particularly those exposed to high risk or having already experienced cases.

Vaccination

A vaccine against poxvirus is available and can be recommended by the veterinarian for canary farms exposed to high risk, particularly in hot and humid areas favorable to mosquitoes, or in the event of a history of cases in the farm. Vaccination is part of a global strategy also involving mosquito control.

Possible complications

Bacterial superinfection of skin lesions is common. In the diphtheroid form, respiratory damage can worsen and lead to severe respiratory distress. Significant eye damage can affect vision. The diphtheroid form has a significantly higher mortality rate than the cutaneous form alone.

Prognosis

The prognosis depends on the form of the disease. The isolated cutaneous form generally has a favorable prognosis, with lesions often healing within a few weeks. The diphtheroid form, affecting the respiratory tract, has a more guarded prognosis and can be fatal, especially in young birds or in the absence of rapid treatment.
