Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common disease in giraffes, whether they live in reserves, zoos, or their natural habitat.

These small worms settle in the animal's stomach or intestines. They feed on blood or digestive tissue and interfere with food absorption.

In young giraffes and weakened animals, infestation can become severe and lead to significant growth retardation or marked weight loss.

When infestation becomes heavy, progressive weight loss may be seen despite maintained appetite, a dull and lackluster coat, decreased energy and alertness.

Soft stools or diarrhea can appear, sometimes accompanied by mild abdominal bloating.

In severe cases, particularly in young calves, growth retardation is observed, pale mucous membranes (resulting from blood loss caused by certain worms), and significantly decreased general condition.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by several species of nematodes (roundworms) that parasitize the digestive tract, notably worms belonging to families similar to those found in cattle and antelopes (digestive strongyles).

Giraffes become infested by browsing foliage or grass contaminated with worm larvae present in the environment, which originate from feces of already-parasitized animals.

Young giraffes, stressed animals, sick animals, or those recently transported are more susceptible.

Close contact with other herbivores in the same enclosure, high stocking density, restricted grazing areas rarely rotated, and crowded conditions all favor the accumulation of infective larvae in the environment.

Warm and humid climatic conditions also promote larval development on soil and foliage.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
