Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs, most often caused by infection. In giraffes, this disease is a significant cause of illness and death, particularly in young animals and in captive collections (zoos, wildlife parks). The giraffe's long respiratory passages, due to the length of its neck, and its particular anatomy can influence how infection becomes established and spreads through the lungs. The disease sometimes progresses very rapidly, making it a veterinary emergency.
It affects both young giraffes and adults, but young animals and individuals weakened by stress, transport, or another illness are more susceptible.

The most common signs are coughing, visible respiratory difficulty (rapid, noisy breathing, breathing effort), nasal discharge, and general lethargy in the animal.
The sick giraffe eats less, loses weight, and often stays apart from the group. Fever is common. In severe cases, breathing becomes very labored and the animal may lie down abnormally or refuse to move, which is a sign of serious illness in this species.
In young giraffes, symptoms may be subtle at first, with only decreased activity and reduced interest in nursing, before sometimes rapid deterioration.

Causes and risk factors
Giraffe pneumonia is most often bacterial in origin, sometimes associated with viruses or lung parasites. Several opportunistic bacteria of the respiratory tract may be involved, taking advantage of an animal's weakened state to develop in the lungs.
In many cases, infection occurs following a period of significant stress (transport, environmental change, fighting, difficult climatic conditions) that weakens the animal's natural defenses. Mixed infections, with several pathogens involved together, are also reported.
Young age is an important risk factor, particularly in young giraffes whose immune system is still immature. Stress related to transport, enclosure change, or introduction into a new group also increases the risk.
Climatic conditions (cold, humidity, sudden temperature changes) and inadequate ventilation of captive housing are known risk factors in this species. Poor general condition, another concurrent illness, or malnutrition also increase the animal's susceptibility.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on clinical observation of the animal (breathing, cough, general condition) supplemented where possible by lung auscultation, which is often difficult with this large-bodied species. Additional examinations such as blood tests, analysis of respiratory secretions, or imaging (radiography, ultrasound) may be performed depending on available resources, especially in captivity.
Restraining a giraffe for these examinations is a delicate procedure requiring specific expertise, owing to the risks associated with anaesthesia and handling of this species.
Treatment
Treatment relies mainly on antibiotics suited to the causative agent, selected and prescribed by the veterinarian. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be given to relieve the animal and reduce lung inflammation.
General supportive care (fluid therapy, nutritional support) is sometimes necessary in severe cases. Management must be swift, as disease progression can be sudden in this species.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies mainly on good environmental management: well-ventilated buildings that are protected from cold draughts, clean and dry bedding, and stress reduction during handling and transport.
Careful monitoring of young animals, appropriate nutrition, and regular veterinary check-ups help identify early signs of weakness. Quarantine and health monitoring of new animals introduced to a collection also limit the risk of introducing new infectious agents.
Possible complications
Without prompt treatment, pneumonia can progress to severe respiratory insufficiency and death. Complications such as generalised infection (septicaemia) or lasting lung damage are possible in animals that survive a severe episode.
The giraffe's size and distinctive anatomy also make emergency procedures (restraint, anaesthesia) riskier in cases of advanced respiratory distress.

Prognosis
The outcome depends greatly on how quickly treatment is started. When detected and treated early, pneumonia can be controlled with a good recovery rate. However, advanced or neglected cases, particularly in young animals, carry a significant risk of death.
Regular monitoring of captive animals and prompt veterinary intervention substantially improve the chances of recovery.
