Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in common cranes (Grus grus), whether wild or kept in captivity in wildlife parks, reserves, or rehabilitation centres.
These parasites live in the bird's intestine and feed on its tissues. They gradually weaken the animal, particularly young cranes or those already stressed by injury or other illness.
Infestation often goes unnoticed at first, making it easy to overlook until the bird loses weight or shows obvious signs of weakness.

Causes and risk factors
The condition is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that colonise the crane's digestive tract. Several genera may be involved depending on the region and husbandry conditions, as these parasites are fairly common in wading birds and large waterfowl.
Infection most commonly occurs through accidental ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment (soil, water, vegetation contaminated by droppings from parasitised birds), or by consuming an intermediate host such as certain insects or molluscs depending on the worm species involved.
Young cranes are more susceptible because their immune system is still developing. Overcrowding in an enclosure, wet and poorly drained ground, inadequate sanitation of basins and feeding areas promote the buildup of parasite eggs in the environment. Stress, unbalanced diet, concurrent illness, or unsuitable captive conditions weaken the bird's natural defenses and increase the risk of severe infestation. Sharing space with other bird species, especially waterfowl, can also facilitate the introduction and spread of parasites.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through the faecal-oral route: cranes become infected by foraging on soil or in water contaminated with worm eggs from the droppings of already parasitised birds. Some parasite life cycles involve an intermediate host (insect, mollusc) that the crane ingests while feeding.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian establishes diagnosis primarily through fecal examination—microscopic analysis of droppings to detect worm eggs. A thorough clinical examination assesses the bird's overall condition, weight, plumage, and hydration status. In some cases, additional testing such as blood work or endoscopy may be recommended to evaluate the impact of infestation or rule out other causes of weight loss.
Treatment
Treatment involves administration of antiparasitic drugs (dewormers) suited to birds, prescribed and dosed exclusively by a veterinarian experienced in avian medicine. General supportive care may be added depending on the bird's condition: rehydration, nutritional supplementation, and rest in a clean, quiet environment while healing. Environmental sanitation must accompany treatment to prevent rapid reinfection.

Prevention
Prevention relies primarily on good environmental management: regular cleaning of enclosures, removal of droppings, proper drainage of damp areas, and prevention of overcrowding. Untreated heavy infestation can lead to severe malnutrition, anemia, and general weakness, making the bird more vulnerable to other infections. In young cranes, this can permanently compromise growth and development. In severe cases, intestinal obstruction from a very high parasite load or death is possible, especially in already weakened birds.

The bird loses weight noticeably despite apparently normal feeding. Worms are visible in the droppings. The crane shows persistent diarrhea or abnormal stools. The bird becomes unusually lethargic, less active, or withdraws from the group. A young bird shows stunted growth compared to others. Several birds in the same group display similar signs.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when the infestation is detected early and treated promptly by a veterinarian, with proper environmental management to prevent reinfection.
However, if diagnosis is delayed, the infestation is heavy, or the bird has underlying weakness (young age, concurrent disease), the prognosis becomes more guarded and complications are possible.
