These parasites have a complex life cycle involving several hosts: eggs are shed into seawater by adult worms in the intestine of marine mammals (dolphins, seals) or seabirds; larvae hatch and are ingested by small planktonic crustaceans; anchovies become infected by eating this infested plankton and serve as intermediate or paratenic hosts, harbouring larvae that do not mature. The cycle is only completed if a marine predator (mammal or large fish) consumes the parasitized anchovy.

Proximity to areas frequented by marine mammals or large colonies of seabirds increases parasitic load in the water. Anchovies caught in open waters and in plankton-rich zones are more heavily exposed due to their plankton-feeding diet. Season, fishing zone, and fish size (older fish having had more time to accumulate larvae) also influence the level of infestation. Prolonged storage of whole fish after capture at room temperature or with minimal refrigeration promotes larval migration from the viscera to the flesh.

Transmission

Nematode eggs shed by infested marine mammals or seabirds hatch in the sea; larvae are ingested by small planktonic crustaceans, which are eaten by anchovies that become intermediate hosts.
