What is it?

Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is very common in emus, especially in young birds raised outdoors in enclosures.

Worms lodged in the stomach, small intestine, or large intestine disrupt digestion and nutrient absorption.

This condition affects emus of all ages, but emu chicks are most vulnerable because their immune system is still immature.

Signs depend on the number of worms present and the age of the bird.

Progressive weight loss despite maintained or variable appetite is common, along with diarrhea or abnormally soft droppings, dull and ruffled feathers, and general lethargy.

In young emu chicks, stunted growth is an important indicator: the bird remains smaller than its age-matched peers.

In severe cases, dehydration may be seen, pale mucous membranes suggesting anemia, and sometimes visible abdominal discomfort.

Some heavily infested birds die suddenly without showing obvious signs beforehand, making regular monitoring essential.

Causes and risk factors

Several genera of nematodes (roundworms) can parasitize the emu digestive tract, including worms found in the gizzard or proventriculus (the glandular part of the stomach) and others in the intestines.

Birds become infected by ingesting, with grass, water, or feed, eggs or larvae of parasites deposited in the environment by droppings from infested birds.

Some parasite cycles involve an intermediate host, such as an insect, which complicates control measures.

Young age is the main risk factor, as emu chicks still have weak immunity.

High bird density in the same enclosure, soil contaminated by droppings, insufficient pasture rotation, and warm, humid weather that favour egg and larval survival increase the risk of infestation.

Stress, unbalanced nutrition, or any concurrent illness weakens the bird's defences and worsens the effects of parasitism.

Transmission

Transmission occurs by ingestion of water, grass, or feed contaminated with eggs or larvae from the droppings of infested birds. Direct contact between birds does not transmit the infection.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Prevention relies mainly on good environmental management: regular pasture rotation to allow the soil to recover, avoiding overcrowding, cleaning and drying damp areas where larvae survive well.

Regular parasite monitoring, tailored to the farming situation and planned with a veterinarian, helps keep parasite burden low before it becomes a problem.

Periodic faecal examination (faecal flotation) shows when treatment is truly needed, rather than treating on routine.

Good nutrition and clean water strengthen the birds' overall resistance.

Possible complications

Severe untreated infestation can lead to marked anaemia, permanent growth failure in young birds, general weakness that invites other infections, and in extreme cases death.

Damage to the intestinal lining may become secondarily infected.

The emu loses weight despite seeming to eat normally.

An emu chick fails to grow at the same rate as others of the same age.

Persistent diarrhoea or abnormal droppings are present.

The bird is dull, lethargic, or refuses to eat.

The mucous membranes (beak, mouth lining) appear pale.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good when infestation is detected early and treated promptly, with good recovery of overall condition.

In heavily parasitized emus, growth retardation may persist even after treatment.

Without intervention, severe infestation can be fatal, particularly in young birds.

Is intestinal parasitism in emus contagious to humans?

No, the specific roundworms found in emus are not transmitted to humans. It is not a zoonotic disease.

How can I tell if my emu has worms without opening it up?

A fecal examination by a veterinarian (coprology) allows parasitic eggs to be detected without having to examine the inside of the bird.

Should all emus be systematically wormed on a regular basis?
