Gastrointestinal parasitism in the hippopotamus refers to infestations by roundworms (nematodes) that live in the animal's stomach or intestines. These parasites are common in hippopotamuses living both in the wild and in captivity, as the animal spends much of its time in water and grazes on wetland areas that favour larval survival. Most healthy adult hippopotamuses harbour some level of parasites without showing significant clinical signs. Problems typically arise when the parasite burden becomes too high, particularly in young animals, weak or stressed individuals.

In most cases, infestation remains mild and causes no visible signs. As the parasite burden increases, progressive weight loss may be observed despite maintained or reduced appetite, dull coat (in young or weak animals), general fatigue and lack of vigour. Digestive disturbances such as diarrhoea or softer stools than usual may develop. In young hippopotamuses, growth retardation is possible. In severe infestations, worms may sometimes be visible in the stools, and the mucous membranes (gums, around the eyes) may appear pale if anaemia is present.

Causes and risk factors
Several species of roundworms (nematodes) can parasitise the hippopotamus's digestive tract, notably gastrointestinal strongyles similar to those found in other large herbivores. These worms lay eggs that are shed in faeces and develop into infective larvae in the moist environment typical of hippopotamus habitat. The animal becomes reinfected by grazing on grass contaminated with these larvae or by moving through water polluted by faecal matter.
Young animals, being less immune, are more vulnerable than adults. Overcrowding in an enclosure or limited water point promotes accumulation of parasites in the environment. Stress, concurrent disease, unbalanced diet or inadequate sanitation of the enclosure increase the risk of significant infestation. In zoos, insufficient hygiene of the pool and grazing areas constitutes a major risk factor.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian searches for worm eggs in fecal samples using parasite analysis (fecal examination). This test estimates the level of infestation and guides treatment decisions. Blood tests may be performed to assess the animal's overall condition, particularly if anemia is suspected. Observation of behavior, appetite, and body condition completes the evaluation.
Treatment
Treatment involves administering broad-spectrum antiparasitic drugs (dewormers) under veterinary supervision. The choice of medication and treatment frequency depend on the situation, level of infestation, and test results. Supportive measures such as enhanced feeding and environmental improvements may accompany treatment in more severe cases.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention depends on proper environmental management: regular cleaning of pools and grazing areas, removal of fecal matter, and rotation of enclosures when possible to limit the buildup of infective larvae. Routine parasite monitoring through fecal testing allows early detection of increasing parasite burden before clinical signs appear. Appropriate feeding and a low-stress environment help maintain the animal's natural defenses against parasites.
Possible complications
Severe untreated infestation can lead to marked weight loss, anemia, general weakness, and increased susceptibility to other diseases. In young animals, this may compromise normal growth. In rare extreme cases, very high parasite burden combined with other stressors can contribute to death, particularly in already weakened individuals.
