Hippopotamus foot inflammation is inflammation of the skin and underlying tissues of the feet. It mainly affects hippopotamuses kept in captivity, in zoos or wildlife parks. This condition resembles what is seen in other large mammals living on hard or persistently wet ground. It can range from simple superficial irritation to deep, painful abscesses.

In the wild, hippopotamuses spend much of their time in water or on soft, muddy ground, which naturally protects their feet. In captivity, prolonged contact with concrete surfaces, poorly maintained ground, or poor water quality promotes the development of this disease.

Early signs are often subtle. Redness or localized swelling may be seen on the foot pad or between the toes.

The animal may show varying degrees of limping or reluctance to move. In more advanced cases, open wounds, abscesses, or areas of cracked skin may develop. The hippopotamus may appear uncomfortable when standing, prefer to remain lying down, or refuse to enter the water.

Loss of appetite and general lethargy sometimes accompany severe forms, particularly when there is significant pain or widespread infection.

Causes and risk factors

Foot inflammation usually results from repeated injury to the skin of the foot by hard, abrasive, or poorly maintained surfaces. Excessive moisture combined with dirty ground promotes skin maceration, which becomes more fragile and prone to secondary bacterial infection.

Opportunistic bacteria present in the environment can then colonize the initial lesions and cause deeper inflammation, or even abscess formation.

The main risk factors are concrete or hard-surface flooring without adequate resting areas, poor-quality or infrequently changed pool water, poorly cleaned enclosures, animal overweight, lack of exercise, and advanced age. Older animals or those in poorer general condition appear more susceptible.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian examines the animal's feet, often during appropriate restraint or under sedation due to the hippopotamus's size and potentially dangerous nature. The appearance of the lesions, their location, and their extent guide the diagnosis.

Samples can be taken to identify the bacteria involved and adjust treatment accordingly. Imaging may sometimes be considered to assess the depth of the lesion, particularly if bone or joint involvement is suspected.

Treatment

In cases of deep abscesses, surgical drainage may be necessary. Improvement of environmental conditions is part of the overall management plan; without these changes, recurrence is frequent.

Prevention

Prevention is based first and foremost on proper habitat design. A suitable floor with soft or sandy areas in addition to hard surfaces reduces repeated trauma. Good water quality and regular water changes in pools are essential.

Thorough enclosure maintenance, monitoring the animal's weight, and regular foot checks during routine care make it possible to detect lesions at an early stage, before they worsen.

Possible complications

Without treatment, lesions can extend deeper and involve subcutaneous tissues, tendons, or even joints. Generalized infection remains a serious complication. Chronic pain can lead to prolonged loss of appetite and general weakness in the animal.

The animal refuses to move, stand, or enter the water.

The prognosis is generally favorable if the disease is detected early and environmental conditions are corrected. Advanced forms with deep involvement or widespread infection require longer management and the prognosis becomes more guarded, particularly if joints or bones are affected.
