Gastrointestinal parasitism by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in okapi, both in the wild and in captivity in zoos. These parasites live in the stomach or intestine of the animal and feed at its expense, causing progressive wear and tear to its general condition. In the okapi, a forest species close to the giraffe, this disease is closely monitored by veterinary teams because the species is threatened and each individual counts in conservation programs.

The signs are often subtle at first. We can observe intermittent diarrhea, a dull and less well-groomed coat, progressive weight loss despite a sometimes preserved appetite. \nThe animal becomes more depressed, less active, and may present dehydration in advanced forms. \nIn young okapis, growth retardation is possible. \nIn severe infestations, the mucous membranes (gums, conjunctiva) may appear pale, a sign of anemia linked to certain hematophagous worms (which feed on blood).

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by several species of gastrointestinal nematodes, notably strongyles, some of which are similar to those found in other ruminants and girafids. These worms colonize the abomasum (last compartment of the stomach) and the small intestine. Infestation occurs by ingestion of larvae present on vegetation or in litter soiled by contaminated feces.

Young animals, stressed or immunocompromised individuals, and those living in overgrazed or poorly cleaned enclosures are at greater risk. The density of animals, soil humidity and poor pasture rotation increase the risk. Stress linked to transport or a change in environment can also promote the clinical expression of the disease in animals that were previously asymptomatic carriers.

Transmission

Transmission occurs by the fecal-oral route: the okapi ingests infective larvae present on fodder, grass or soil contaminated by the excrement of carrier animals. The parasite cycle depends on temperature and humidity, with larvae surviving best in warm, humid environments.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The diagnosis is mainly based on coproscopic analysis (examination of stools under a microscope) to detect and count parasite eggs. The veterinarian can also rely on a blood test to assess anemia or general condition, as well as clinical observation of the animal. In some cases, more precise identification of the worm species may require larval culture.

Treatment

Treatment is based on the administration of antiparasitics (wormers) belonging to different families, chosen by the veterinarian according to the type of parasite identified and the situation of the animal. Nutritional support and rehydration may be combined in more severe cases. Environmental management (cleaning, reduction of soil contamination) is an integral part of treatment to avoid reinfestation.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is based on good management of enclosure hygiene: regular collection of faeces, rotation of grazing areas if possible, and avoidance of overpopulation. \nRegular parasitological checks of stools make it possible to detect an infestation before the appearance of severe symptoms. \nA reasonable deworming program, decided by the veterinarian based on the analysis results, helps limit the parasitic load without encouraging the appearance of resistance.

Possible complications

Untreated infestation can lead to severe anemia, chronic weight loss and general weakening increasing susceptibility to other diseases. In young people, lasting growth retardation is possible. In extreme cases, particularly in already weakened animals, the outcome can be fatal.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good if the infestation is detected early and treated appropriately. He becomes more reserved in cases of severe anemia, diagnostic delay or associated diseases, particularly in young people or already weakened animals.
