Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in baboons, both in the wild and in captivity. Several species of worms can colonize the stomach and intestines, including certain strongyles, pinworms, and hookworms. Most healthy baboons carry a small number of these parasites without any ill effects. Problems arise when the parasite burden becomes excessive, particularly in young animals, weakened or stressed individuals, or in overcrowded and poorly maintained enclosures.

As the parasite burden increases, diarrhea sometimes becomes chronic, progressive weight loss may occur despite maintained or reduced appetite, the coat becomes dull and poorly groomed, general fatigue develops, and the belly may appear bloated or be tender to touch.
In young baboons, growth retardation is possible.
In severe infestations, adult worms may occasionally be visible in the feces.
Dehydration can develop if diarrhea persists.

Causes and risk factors
The condition is caused by gastrointestinal nematodes—roundworms that live in the stomach or intestines. In baboons, the most commonly encountered genera belong to groups similar to those found in other primates, including digestive strongyles, pinworms, and sometimes hookworms. Eggs from these parasites are shed in the feces and contaminate the environment, water, or food, where they can survive for several weeks under favorable humidity and temperature conditions.
Young animals, pregnant or nursing females, and baboons weakened by another illness are more susceptible to severe infestation. Overcrowded enclosures, poor sanitation, repeatedly contaminated flooring, inadequate waste management, access to contaminated water or food, and chronic stress from transport or group changes increase the risk and severity of disease.
Transmission
Infection occurs primarily through the oral route, by ingesting eggs or larvae present in soil, contaminated water, or food soiled by infested feces. Some larvae can also penetrate directly through the skin. Proximity among animals in groups, mutual licking, and contact with contaminated soil promote transmission within a troop or enclosure.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on clinical examination and especially on coproscopic analysis—microscopic examination of feces to detect parasite eggs. This test identifies the type of worm involved and assesses the degree of infestation. In some cases, additional testing such as blood work may help evaluate the overall impact of disease, particularly anemia or dehydration.
Treatment
Treatment involves administering broad-spectrum antiparasitic agents (dewormers) selected and tailored by the veterinarian based on the worm species identified. Supportive care may be added in cases of dehydration or significant weight loss, such as fluid therapy or nutritional support.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular and thorough enclosure cleaning, proper feces management, access to clean water, and quality feed reduce contamination. Routine fecal examinations allow detection of infestation before clinical signs appear. In facilities housing baboons, periodic preventive deworming as recommended by the veterinarian based on local conditions is part of good management practices. Quarantining newly arrived animals for parasite screening prevents introduction of parasites to an uninfected group.
Possible complications
Untreated heavy infestation can lead to anemia, stunted growth in young animals, severe dehydration from chronic diarrhea, and general weakness that makes the animal more susceptible to secondary infections.

Adherence to basic hygiene measures (hand washing, wearing gloves when cleaning enclosures) significantly reduces this risk.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when the infestation is detected and treated promptly, especially in an adult in good general condition. It becomes more guarded in young animals, already weakened animals, or when there is a delay in treatment, where complications such as anaemia or dehydration may develop.

Can a healthy baboon have worms without being sick?
Yes. Many healthy baboons carry a small number of intestinal parasites without showing any signs. It is the increase in parasite load that makes the animal sick.
How do you know if a baboon has roundworms?
The only reliable method is a stool analysis performed by a veterinarian, called a fecal examination or coproscopy, which searches for parasite eggs under a microscope.
Can this disease be transmitted to humans?
