Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in belugas, whether they live in the wild or in dolphinariums. \n\nWorms belonging mainly to the Anisakidae family settle in the stomach and sometimes the intestine of the animal. They are present in most wild belugas in small quantities, without necessarily causing disease. The problem occurs when the number of parasites becomes too great, or the animal is otherwise weakened.\n\nThis disease affects both young people and adults, but young people and stressed or immunocompromised animals are more susceptible to a severe form.

The signs are often discreet and non-specific, making diagnosis difficult without a veterinary examination. \n\nWe may observe a decreased appetite or refusal of certain fish, progressive weight loss despite an apparently normal diet, vomiting or regurgitation of partially digested food, sometimes accompanied by visible worms. \n\nThe animal may seem more tired, less active during interactions or training sessions (in a dolphinarium), and present abdominal discomfort. In massive infestations, perforation of the digestive wall may occur, leading to peritonitis, a life-threatening emergency.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms), mainly of the genera Anisakis, Pseudoterranova or Contracaecum, which parasitize the stomach and intestine of the beluga. \n\nThe cycle of these parasites passes through fish and crustaceans which serve as intermediate hosts. The beluga becomes infested by eating prey carrying infective larvae. Once ingested, these larvae develop in the digestive tract and can attach there, causing local inflammation.

A diet based on uncontrolled raw fish, particularly in the wild, promotes infestation. \n\nIn dolphinariums, the use of fish that have been frozen and then properly thawed reduces this risk, because freezing kills most of the larvae. \n\nStress, immunosuppression, young age, or concomitant illness increase the animal's susceptibility to a severe clinical form of the infestation.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian uses the animal's dietary and clinical history, a general examination, and stool analyzes to look for parasite eggs or larvae. \n\nBlood tests can help assess general condition and look for inflammation. In some cases, a digestive endoscopy or ultrasound may be performed to directly visualize parasites or lesions in the digestive wall.

Treatment

Treatment is based on the use of families of antiparasitics adapted to marine mammals, prescribed and administered only by a specialized veterinarian. \n\nNutritional support and sometimes anti-inflammatories or digestive protectants may be combined depending on the animal's condition. In the event of a complication such as digestive perforation, surgical treatment and intensive care are necessary.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is mainly based on the quality of the diet. \n\nIn a controlled environment, it is recommended to freeze fish intended for feeding belugas according to appropriate protocols before serving them, which destroys the majority of nematode larvae. \n\nRegular parasitological checks on animals and veterinary monitoring make it possible to detect an infestation before it becomes clinically serious. In the wild, prevention is not possible, parasitism being part of the natural ecology of the species.

Possible complications

A significant untreated infestation can lead to chronic inflammation of the digestive wall, ulcers, or even perforation with peritonitis, a serious complication that can put the animal's life in danger. \n\nChronic weight loss and general weakening can also make the animal vulnerable to other illnesses.

Persistent loss of appetite or refusal of food for several days.\nRepeated vomiting, especially if worms are visible.\nProgressive weight loss without apparent cause.\nUnusual depression or marked drop in activity.\nApparent abdominal pain or sudden change in behavior.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good when the infestation is detected at a mild to moderate stage and treated promptly. \n\nIt becomes more reserved in the event of a complication such as a digestive perforation or in an animal already weakened by another pathology.

Frequently asked questions

Can the beluga transmit these worms to humans?

The risk is mainly linked to the consumption of contaminated raw fish, not to contact with the animal itself. This parasitism is not considered a zoonosis transmitted directly by the beluga.

Are all wild belugas infested?

A large proportion of wild belugas carry a small quantity of these worms without being sick. It is the massive infestation or weakening of the animal that makes the disease clinically important.

Can we completely prevent this infestation in dolphinariums?

The risk can be greatly reduced through appropriate freezing of fish and regular parasitological monitoring, but a residual risk persists because no method is 100% guaranteed.

How do you know that a beluga is infested without seeing it vomit worms?

The veterinarian looks for eggs or larvae in the stool and assesses the general condition of the animal; clinical signs alone do not confirm the diagnosis.
