This bacteria is closely related to Brucella which infects terrestrial livestock, but has evolved to adapt to marine life. In the narwhal, this disease remains poorly documented due to the difficulty of studying this Arctic species. Current knowledge comes mainly from the observation of other cetaceans such as dolphins and porpoises, in which the disease is better known. The bacteria can settle permanently in certain organs, in particular the nervous system, reproductive organs and joints.
