Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in goldfinches, whether kept in cages, aviaries, or captured from the wild.
The parasites most frequently involved are roundworms (Ascaridia) and hairworms (Capillaria). These live in the bird's intestine and feed at its expense, gradually causing overall weight loss and weakness.
This disease particularly affects birds kept in groups, in aviaries where hygiene is difficult to maintain, as parasites spread easily through contaminated droppings.

Signs are often subtle at first, making the disease hard to notice without examination.
Progressive weight loss may occur despite maintained or even increased appetite. The plumage becomes dull and ruffled, the bird appears less active and spends more time perched, fluffed up.
Diarrhea or abnormally soft droppings may develop, sometimes with visible worms in the feces. In young birds, growth delay is possible.
In severe infestations, the bird may show a swollen belly, vomiting or regurgitation of food, and marked lethargy.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by intestinal roundworms, mainly Ascaridia and Capillaria species. These worms lay eggs that are shed in the droppings of infested birds.
These eggs become infective in the environment after some time, sometimes after passing through an intermediate host such as an insect. Another bird becomes infected by ingesting these eggs, for example by pecking at contaminated food, water, or bedding.
The main risk factors are poor cage or aviary hygiene, high bird density, an earthen or poorly cleaned floor, and introducing new birds without a quarantine period.
Young birds, weakened or already sick individuals, and birds recently captured from the wild are more susceptible to heavy infestation.
Stress, unbalanced diet, and close contact with other bird species also increase risk.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly by the fecal-oral route: the bird ingests parasite eggs present in droppings that contaminate food, water, perches, or cage bedding. Some parasite cycles involve an insect as an intermediate host, which promotes transmission in outdoor aviaries.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian makes the diagnosis primarily by microscopic examination of the droppings, looking for parasite eggs. This test, called fecal examination, may require multiple samples as egg shedding can be irregular.
A complete clinical examination of the bird allows assessment of its general condition, weight, and the severity of infestation. In some cases, additional tests may be recommended to rule out other causes of weight loss.
Treatment
Treatment involves administering antiparasitic medication prescribed and dosed by the veterinarian based on the parasite identified and the bird's weight.
Supportive care may be added, such as nutritional supplements or rehydration measures, to help the bird recover.
Thorough cleaning of the bird's environment must be done alongside treatment to prevent immediate reinfestation.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular and thorough cage or aviary maintenance is essential: frequent floor cleaning, disinfection of feeders and water bowls, daily removal of droppings.
New birds should be quarantined before joining a group, and regular parasitological checks by a veterinarian are recommended, particularly in collective aviary settings.
Avoiding overcrowding and limiting contact with wild birds or birds of unknown origin also helps reduce risk.

Without treatment, heavy infestation can lead to severe weight loss, dehydration, intestinal blockage in extreme cases, and general weakening that makes the bird more vulnerable to other infections.
In young goldfinches, lasting growth delay is possible.

Can a dewormed goldfinch become reinfested?

Should all goldfinches in an aviary be systematically wormed?

Can you see worms with the naked eye?
