Gastrointestinal parasitism by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition among large scavenging raptors such as the Andean condor, whether they live in the wild or in captivity (zoo, conservation center).
These parasites live in the stomach or intestine of the bird and feed at its expense.
A light infestation often goes unnoticed, but a significant parasitic load can seriously weaken the animal, especially in young people or already weakened individuals.

The signs are often subtle at first.
We can observe a progressive weight loss despite a preserved appetite, or on the contrary a clear drop in appetite.
Loose or diarrheal stools, sometimes with visible worms, are possible.
The plumage may become dull and less well-groomed, an indirect sign of poor general condition.
In young condors, growth retardation may appear.
In severe cases, vomiting, marked depression and abdominal distention may occur.

Causes and risk factors
The roundworms responsible mainly belong to the ascarid and capillary families, nematodes classically found in carnivorous and scavenger birds.
The condor becomes infested by ingesting eggs of parasites present in the environment (soil, contaminated water) or by consuming prey or carrion itself carrying infective larvae.
Direct transmission between birds via contaminated surfaces or equipment is also possible in captivity.
Young birds and weakened or stressed individuals are more susceptible to severe infestations.
Promiscuity and confinement in an aviary encourage the accumulation of parasite eggs in the environment.
Insufficient hygiene of enclosures, floors soiled by droppings, and lack of rotation of spaces increase the risk.
Access to uncontrolled carrion or prey also constitutes a significant risk factor for this scavenger species.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The diagnosis is based on the examination of the stools under a microscope, making it possible to highlight the eggs of parasites (flotation technique in particular).
In some cases, an endoscopy or post-mortem autopsy can confirm the presence of adult worms.
The veterinarian also assesses the general condition of the bird, its weight and its behavior to judge the severity of the infestation.
Treatment
The treatment uses specific antiparasitics from the benzimidazole family or other molecules active on nematodes, prescribed and dosed exclusively by a veterinarian specializing in birds or wildlife.
Supportive treatment (rehydration, nutritional supplements) can accompany deworming in weakened cases.
Complete cleaning of the environment is essential alongside treatment to avoid immediate reinfestation.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based on good hygiene of the enclosure: regular cleaning, management of droppings, and limitation of stagnant humidity which promotes egg survival.
A periodic veterinary check-up with stool analysis can detect an infestation before serious symptoms appear.
The quality and traceability of food (controlled meat rather than unmonitored carrion) reduces the risk in captivity.
A suitable preventive deworming program can be implemented by the veterinarian depending on the context of the center or zoo.
Possible complications
A massive infestation left untreated can lead to intestinal obstruction, digestive perforation or severe anemia.
The general weakening makes the bird more vulnerable to other opportunistic infections.
In young people, lasting growth retardation is possible.
