Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is very common in pheasants, particularly in free-range or aviary-reared flocks. Several species of worms inhabit the intestines, gizzard, or esophagus of the bird. The main culprits are Heterakis gallinarum, Ascaridia galli, and Capillaria spp. These parasites establish themselves gradually and weaken the bird, sometimes without obvious signs initially. Young pheasants (poults) are most susceptible and can die from heavy infestation.

With heavier infestation, progressive weight loss may occur despite preserved appetite, ruffled and dull plumage, decreased activity, diarrhea, or abnormally soft droppings.
In young poults, marked growth delay is common. In severe cases, anemia with pale mucous membranes and death can occur, especially when multiple worm species are present together.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that parasitize the digestive tract. Ascaridia galli lives in the small intestine, Heterakis gallinarum in the caeca (small pouches at the junction between the small intestine and colon), and Capillaria spp. may lodge in the esophagus, crop, or intestine depending on the species. Worm eggs are shed in droppings and become infective after time in the environment, contaminating soil, bedding, and water.
Young pheasants and juvenile birds are more susceptible than adults.\n\nHigh stocking density on the same range greatly increases risk, as parasite eggs accumulate in the soil over time.\n\nMoisture, poor soil drainage, and failure to rotate pastures favor egg survival.\n\nGeneral weakness in the bird (stress, other illness, unbalanced diet) makes infestation more severe.
Transmission
Infection occurs through ingestion of infective eggs present on soil, in contaminated bedding, or water. Some worms, such as Heterakis, can also be transmitted via an intermediate host like an earthworm, which the pheasant picks up while foraging. Egg accumulation is favored by high bird density in the same area and persistent moisture.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian performs a fecal examination, looking at droppings under a microscope to find and identify worm eggs. This test confirms the diagnosis and estimates how severe the infestation is. In some cases, examining a dead bird during necropsy can reveal worms directly in the digestive tract.
Treatment
Treatment involves giving broad-spectrum antiparasitic medications (dewormers) prescribed and dosed by the veterinarian based on the birds' weight and the type of worm identified. Supportive care (nutritional supplements, rehydration) may be given to weakened birds. Environmental cleaning must accompany treatment to prevent quick reinfection.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies on good management practices: avoiding overcrowding, maintaining clean and well-drained ground, and rotating pastures regularly to allow parasite eggs to be destroyed naturally by sun and dry conditions.\n\nRegular cleaning of feeders, waterers, and bedding limits contamination.\n\nRegular fecal screening by a veterinarian detects infestation before clinical signs appear and allows antiparasitic treatments to be given at the right time.
Possible complications
Severe untreated infestation can lead to significant anemia, permanent stunted growth in young birds, and in severe cases bird death. Heterakis gallinarum plays a particular role because it can transmit another parasite, Histomonas meleagridis, which causes histomoniasis (blackhead disease), a serious condition especially in turkeys but also reported in pheasants.
