Gastrointestinal parasitism by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in the giant anteater, whether kept in captivity (zoos, animal parks) or observed in the wild. These worms live in the intestine and sometimes the stomach of the animal, feeding at its expense and causing irritation of the digestive mucosa. In this strict insectivorous species, whose digestive system is particularly sensitive, a significant parasitic load can quickly lead to general weakening.

The signs are often discreet at first: looser stools than usual, appetite which gradually decreases, animal less active than normal. \nOver time, we can observe weight loss despite an apparently normal diet, a coat that loses its shine, and sometimes episodes of diarrhea or vomiting. \nIn more severe cases, the animal may become dehydrated, show a sensitive stomach to the touch, and in young anteaters, growth retardation is possible. \nIt happens that adult worms are visible directly in the stool, which is a fairly suggestive sign.

Causes and risk factors
Several types of intestinal nematodes can parasitize the giant anteater, including roundworms and other roundworms adapted to myrmecophages (ant and termite eaters). Infestation generally occurs through ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment, water or sometimes via consumed prey.
Young animals, stressed or recently transferred individuals, and those kept in enclosures where hygiene is difficult to control are more exposed. \nA high density of animals in the same space, soil that is not regularly renewed, and an immune system weakened by another disease or by captivity also increase the risk of massive infestation.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly by the fecal-oral route: the animal ingests eggs of parasites present in a dirty environment (floor, litter, drinking water). Some parasitic cycles may also involve an intermediate host, such as an insect, which the anteater consumes as part of its usual diet.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian bases his diagnosis on the clinical examination of the animal and especially on a coproscopic analysis, that is to say the examination of the stools under a microscope to look for parasite eggs. \nIn certain cases, additional tests such as a blood test or an abdominal ultrasound may be offered to assess the general impact of the infestation on the body.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the administration of antiparasitics adapted to the species, chosen and dosed exclusively by the veterinarian due to the particular sensitivity of the anteater to certain molecules. \nNutritional support and rehydration may be combined in the event of marked weakening.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based on good hygiene in the enclosure: regular cleaning, management of droppings, and quality of drinking water. \nPeriodic parasitological monitoring by analysis of stools, carried out by the veterinary team of the park or zoo, makes it possible to detect an infestation before the appearance of symptoms. \nQuarantine and systematic parasite control of new animals before their introduction into an existing group also limits the spread.
Possible complications
A massive infestation left untreated can lead to intestinal obstruction, progressive anemia, or general weakening making the animal more vulnerable to other infections. In young people, lasting growth retardation is possible.
When to see a veterinarian
The animal presents with diarrhea which persists for more than two days.
Worms are visible in the stool.
The animal loses weight or refuses to eat.
The coat becomes dull and the animal appears dejected.
A young anteater does not grow normally.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when parasitism is detected and treated early. On the other hand, a massive and neglected infestation can seriously compromise the health of the animal, particularly in young people or already weakened individuals.

Is roundworm parasitism common in giant anteaters in captivity?
Yes, it is one of the most commonly reported digestive conditions in this species in captivity, due to the difficulty in completely controlling environmental hygiene.
Can we see worms with the naked eye?
In some cases, yes: adult worms may be visible in the stool. But the absence of visible worms does not exclude an infestation; only a stool analysis can confirm it with certainty.
Should we treat all the anteaters in the same enclosure?
It is often recommended by the veterinarian when living in groups and sharing the environment favors transmission between individuals, even if not everyone shows symptoms.
Can this parasitism be transmitted to humans?
Intestinal nematodes specific to anteaters are not considered transmissible to humans under usual contact conditions.
