Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in lions, both in the wild and in captivity (zoos, parks, reserves).
The main parasites belong to the genera Toxascaris and Toxocara, which are closely related to those found in domestic cats.
These worms live in the animal's intestine and feed partly on digestive contents, disrupting digestion and nutrient absorption.

Signs vary depending on the animal's age and the intensity of infestation.
In lion cubs, a swollen belly ('bloated'), diarrhoea sometimes tinged with blood, vomiting, dull coat and stunted growth compared to littermates may be seen.
In adults, symptoms are often more subtle: progressive weight loss despite maintained appetite, dull coat, episodes of diarrhoea or loose stools.
In some cases, adult worms may be visible in faeces or vomit, particularly after antiparasitic treatment.
Massive infestation, especially in young animals, can cause intestinal obstruction due to worm accumulation, which is a life-threatening emergency.

Causes and risk factors
Infestation is caused by intestinal nematodes, mainly Toxascaris leonina and species of the genus Toxocara.
Ingested larvae or eggs develop in the digestive tract until the adult stage, when worms attach to the intestinal wall or live freely in the intestinal lumen.
Some species can also migrate across the placenta or via mother's milk, infecting lion cubs from birth or during nursing.
Lion cubs and young animals are most vulnerable due to their immature immune systems.
Animals living in captivity in poorly cleaned enclosures or with high population density are more exposed to repeated environmental contamination.
Stress, poor nutrition, or concurrent illness can weaken the animal's defenses and promote more severe infestation.
In the wild, predation on heavily parasitized prey increases the risk of infestation.
Transmission
Contamination occurs mainly through ingestion of eggs in the environment contaminated by infected faeces, or by consumption of prey (rodents, ungulates) carrying encysted larvae in their tissues.
In lion cubs, vertical transmission is possible: larvae can cross the placenta or pass in the mother's milk.
In captivity, crowding and repeated contamination of enclosures favour the persistence of the parasitic cycle.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on fecal examination in the laboratory, allowing detection and identification of worm eggs (fecal flotation examination).
The veterinarian may also directly observe adult worms passed in feces or vomit.
In more complex cases or if intestinal obstruction is suspected, abdominal ultrasound or other imaging may be performed.
Treatment
Treatment is based on administration of broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication active against nematodes, prescribed by the veterinarian according to the animal's weight and condition.
In cases of dehydration or marked weakness, supportive fluid therapy may be added.
Repeated treatment at regular intervals is often necessary to eliminate worms at different developmental stages and limit reinfestations.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies on regular deworming with appropriate antiparasitic medications, prescribed and administered under veterinary supervision, particularly in lion cubs from the first weeks of life.
In captivity, thorough and frequent cleaning of enclosures, prompt fecal removal, and proper management of animal density limit environmental contamination.
Parasite control of prey given as food, when possible, also reduces the risk of infestation from ingestion of encysted larvae.
Possible complications
Massive infestation can cause intestinal obstruction, a potentially life-threatening surgical emergency, particularly in young animals.
Chronic malabsorption of nutrients leads to stunted growth and general weakness, making the animal more susceptible to other infections.
Anemia may also develop from chronic digestive blood loss.

Persistent diarrhea or diarrhea containing blood in a lion cub or adult.
Progressive weight loss despite apparently normal appetite.

Transmission to humans
Certain roundworm species in lions, notably Toxocara, can theoretically infest humans through accidental ingestion of eggs present in contaminated environments, causing human toxocarosis (larva migrans).
The risk mainly concerns zoo or reserve staff in direct contact with animal feces, rather than the general public.
Simple hygiene measures (handwashing, wearing gloves when cleaning enclosures) help reduce this risk.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when infestation is detected and treated early, particularly in an otherwise healthy adult.
In a lion cub, the prognosis depends on the intensity of infestation and how quickly treatment is started: untreated intestinal obstruction can be fatal.
With regular veterinary monitoring and appropriate environmental management, reinfection can be limited.
