Gastrointestinal roundworm (nematode) parasitism is a common infestation in the Atlantic puffin, a diving seabird of the Alcidae family. Adult worms lodge in the stomach, gizzard or intestine of the bird. This disease mainly affects birds living in natural coastal environments or in captivity in zoos and seabird care centers. A light infestation often goes unnoticed, but a significant parasitic load can seriously weaken the bird, especially young ones or already weakened individuals.

The signs are often subtle at first. We can observe a progressive weight loss despite a preserved appetite, or on the contrary a decrease in appetite. The plumage becomes dull and less waterproof. The bird appears more tired, less active, and remains more often perched rather than in the water. Digestive problems such as abnormal, soft or discolored stools may appear. In advanced cases, you can sometimes see worms in the droppings. Mild abdominal bloating is possible in heavily infested birds. In young puffins (chicks), stunted growth and dehydration are warning signs.

Causes and risk factors
The infestation is caused by nematodes (roundworms) which parasitize the digestive tract, particularly the stomach and intestine. The eggs or larvae are ingested by the bird, often via contaminated fish or marine invertebrates that are part of its natural diet, or via contaminated water and soil in a captive environment.
Young birds, whose immune systems are still immature, are more vulnerable. Promiscuity in a nesting colony or aviary increases the risk of contamination. A poorly maintained captive environment, with insufficient hygiene of ponds and feeding areas, encourages the accumulation of parasites. Stress, an unbalanced diet or a concomitant illness weaken the bird's natural defenses and worsen the infestation.
Transmission
Indirect transmission by ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment, water, soil or via contaminated prey (fish, marine invertebrates).
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian specializing in exotic or sea birds establishes the diagnosis by examining the droppings under a microscope, looking for eggs or larvae of worms. A complete clinical examination makes it possible to assess the general condition, weight and hydration of the bird. In some cases, an endoscopy or other additional tests may be necessary to confirm the location of the parasites.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the administration of antiparasitics (wormers) suitable for birds, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian. Nutritional support and rehydration may be combined in cases of marked weakening. Environmental treatment (cleaning, disinfection) often accompanies the care of the bird itself.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular parasite control by examining droppings is recommended in structures housing puffins in captivity. Frequent cleaning of ponds, floors and feeding areas limits environmental contamination. The quality and freshness of fish fed should be monitored. Periodic veterinary monitoring makes it possible to detect an infestation before the appearance of severe symptoms, particularly in young or recently collected birds.
Possible complications
A massive untreated infestation can lead to digestive obstruction or inflammation, anemia and general weakening which can lead to death, especially in chicks or birds that are already otherwise weakened. Chronic malnutrition and reduced immunity make the bird more susceptible to other infections.
