Narwhal gastrointestinal parasitism refers to the infestation of the stomach and intestine of this animal by roundworms (nematodes). These are very common parasites in cetaceans living in the natural environment, transmitted through food. In narwhals, this infestation is generally well tolerated, but it can become problematic when the animal is weakened, young, or subjected to significant environmental stress.\n\nMost wild narwhals carry a low to moderate parasite load without visible signs of disease. This subject remains little scientifically documented because the narwhal is an Arctic species difficult to observe and study, unlike coastal or captive cetaceans.

In the majority of cases, the infestation does not cause any visible external signs and the narwhal continues its normal behavior. In more fragile individuals, we can observe progressive weight loss despite an apparently normal diet, a drop in energy and alertness when moving, or digestive disorders that are difficult to identify in a natural environment such as abnormal stools.\n\nThese signs are rarely specific to this parasitism alone and can accompany other health problems in the narwhal, such as a high parasitic load associated with other diseases or a degraded environment.

Causes and risk factors

The infestation is caused by roundworms (nematodes) which colonize the stomach and intestine. Among cetaceans, the most reported families of nematodes belong in particular to the genera found in the digestive tract of marine mammals, transmitted via the marine food chain (fish and invertebrates consumed by the narwhal acting as intermediate hosts carrying the parasitic larvae).

Young narwhals, individuals weakened by another disease, malnourished, or subjected to significant stress (changes in sea ice, changes in prey availability) are more likely to develop a clinically significant infestation. A high parasite load linked to a significant abundance of infested prey in certain hunting areas may also play a role.

Transmission

The narwhal becomes infested by consuming marine prey (fish, cephalopods, crustaceans) carrying nematode larvae. There is no direct transmission between narwhals; the parasitic cycle depends on the Arctic marine food chain.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The diagnosis of this parasitism is made almost exclusively post-mortem, during the examination of the digestive tract of a narwhal stranded, hunted or found dead, by direct observation of the worms or by parasitological analysis of the stools or digestive contents. There is no practical diagnostic method applicable to a narwhal living in the wild.

Treatment

In veterinary medicine for marine mammals, antiparasitics from the anthelmintic family can be used in cetaceans in care (for example in rehabilitation centers), but no treatment is applicable to a wild narwhal. Management therefore remains essentially a question of population surveillance rather than individual intervention.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

There are no preventive measures applicable in the wild for this species. Monitoring narwhal populations, particularly through studies carried out on animals that have been stranded, hunted or found dead, allows us to better understand the prevalence of this parasitism and its possible impact on the health of Arctic populations.

Possible complications

A very high parasite load can, in rare cases, lead to inflammation of the digestive wall, partial obstruction, or worsen the general condition of an otherwise weakened animal. However, this parasitism alone is rarely the direct cause of mortality in narwhals.

A narwhal observed abnormally thin or weakened during a scientific expedition must be reported to the competent wildlife authorities.\nAn animal stranded or in distress must be reported immediately to the local marine wildlife rescue services.\nAny observation of repeated abnormal behavior in a monitored individual (telemetry, marking) must be transmitted to the relevant research teams.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good, with the majority of narwhals tolerating a moderate parasite load without impact on their overall health or life expectancy. The prognosis becomes more reserved only in animals already weakened by another cause, where parasitism can contribute to a deterioration of the general condition.
