Cylindrical worms settle in the intestine, stomach, or sometimes other digestive organs of the bird. They feed on food ingested by the animal or on the intestinal wall itself, which disrupts digestion and nutrient absorption. This disease particularly affects birds living in confined environments, in aviaries or conservation centers, where repeated contact with the same soil or perches promotes reinfection.

Signs are often subtle at first, making detection difficult in a shy bird like the quetzal. Progressive weight loss may be observed despite apparently preserved appetite, or conversely a decrease in appetite. The plumage becomes dull, less glossy, and the bird appears tired, less active, sometimes resting weakly on its perch. Abnormal droppings, soft or diarrheal, may appear, and whole worms or fragments are sometimes visible in the feces. In young quetzals, growth retardation and a distended or tender abdomen may develop. In severe infestations, intestinal obstruction or anemia may set in, endangering the bird's life.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms) belonging to various genera that can parasitize the digestive tract of birds, such as ascarids, capillaries, or other digestive helminths. These parasites lay eggs that are shed in droppings and contaminate the environment, perches, water, or food. The bird becomes infected by ingesting these eggs or by consuming insects or intermediate prey carrying infective larvae.
Birds kept in captivity or in aviaries where space is limited and the substrate is repeatedly reused face higher risk due to accumulation of parasite eggs in the environment. Stress, unbalanced diet, or a weakened immune system favour parasite establishment and multiplication. Young birds and those recently transferred from natural habitat to a conservation setting are particularly vulnerable.
Transmission
Transmission occurs primarily through the fecal-oral route: the bird ingests worm eggs present on soil, perches, contaminated water, or contaminated food. Some nematodes require passage through an intermediate host, such as an insect, which the bird consumes during its natural feeding.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The exotic bird veterinarian establishes diagnosis mainly through microscopic examination of faeces, looking for nematode eggs or larvae. A complete clinical examination assesses general condition, weight and plumage quality. In some cases, additional tests such as blood work or imaging may be recommended to evaluate the consequences of infestation on the bird's health.
Treatment
Treatment involves administration of antiparasitic drugs specific to nematodes, prescribed and tailored by the veterinarian according to the identified parasite species and the bird's condition. Nutritional support and sometimes rehydration may accompany antiparasitic treatment if the bird is significantly weakened. Thorough cleaning of the bird's environment is essential alongside treatment to prevent immediate reinfestation.

Regular and thorough cleaning of aviaries, perches and feeding areas significantly reduces the parasite load in the environment.

Routine parasite screening through faecal analysis, performed by an avian or exotic animal veterinarian, enables detection of infestation before severe symptoms develop.
A balanced diet suited to the specific needs of the quetzal helps maintain a robust immune system against parasites.
Possible complications
Untreated heavy infestation can cause intestinal obstruction, severe anaemia from nutritional depletion, significant general decline, and in the most severe cases, death of the bird, particularly in young or already compromised individuals.
