It results from repeated injury to the skin of the foot, often caused by an unsuitable perch, which progresses to an open sore and then to an infection if not treated promptly.

Early on, simple redness or mild thickening of the skin under the foot may be seen, sometimes hard to spot beneath the feathers of the leg scales.
