Gastrointestinal parasitism in nightingales caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common digestive infestation in wild and captive birds. It is caused by small cylindrical worms that lodge in the bird's intestines or stomach. This problem mainly affects nightingales raised in aviaries or collected after capture, but can also affect wild birds with significant exposure. Without treatment, the infestation can permanently weaken the animal, particularly young birds and those already compromised.

Signs are often subtle at first. Progressive weight loss may be seen despite maintained or decreased appetite. Droppings may become soft or diarrheal, sometimes with visible small worms or whitish fragments. The plumage becomes dull and poorly maintained, the bird appears depressed, less active, and spends more time perched motionless at the bottom of the cage or without activity. In heavy infestations, the crop or abdomen may appear distended, and stunted growth is possible in young birds.

Causes and risk factors

Infestation is caused by gastrointestinal nematodes (roundworms), notably ascarids or capillaria, which parasitize the digestive tract. Contamination generally occurs through ingestion of eggs present in the environment (soil, feeder, contaminated water) or through ingestion of an intermediate host such as an insect carrying infective larvae.

Young birds, those kept in overcrowded aviaries, or living in conditions of poor hygiene are most exposed. Soil contaminated with droppings, contaminated food, stress from captivity, and a weakened immune system promote the establishment and multiplication of parasites. Wild birds collected when injured or exhausted are also more vulnerable.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through the fecal-oral route: the bird ingests parasite eggs present in droppings, soil, food, or contaminated water. Some worms require passage through an insect intermediate host before becoming infective to the bird.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

An avian veterinarian makes the diagnosis mainly through microscopic examination of the droppings to look for parasite eggs. A thorough clinical examination of the bird (weight, feather condition, abdominal palpation) completes the assessment. In some cases, additional tests may be recommended if the bird's overall condition warrants it.

Treatment

Treatment is based on administration of an antiparasitic medication suitable for birds, prescribed and dosed exclusively by a veterinarian, as the safety margin in small songbirds is narrow. Supportive measures (rehydration, appropriate feeding) may be added if the bird is weakened. Thorough cleaning of the environment is essential alongside treatment to prevent immediate reinfestation.

Prevention

Regular cleaning of aviaries, feeders and drinkers significantly reduces the risk of contamination. Avoid accumulating droppings on the floor and change the substrate frequently. Regular veterinary checkups with fecal analysis allow early detection of infestation before visible symptoms appear, especially in captive birds or those recently rescued.

Possible complications

Severe untreated infestation can lead to severe dehydration, significant weight loss, intestinal blockage in rare cases, and overall weakness that makes the bird more vulnerable to other infections. In young birds, lasting growth retardation is possible.

The bird is visibly losing weight despite apparently normal appetite.

Worms or suspicious fragments are visible in the droppings.

The feathers become dull and the bird remains unusually lethargic or immobile.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good if infestation is detected and treated early, with return to normal condition within a few weeks. The prognosis becomes more guarded in birds already severely weakened, young birds, or in cases of massive untreated infestation.
