Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in European robins, small insectivorous birds frequently seen in Tunisian gardens. These parasites live in the bird's intestines or stomach and feed at its expense. Light infections often go unnoticed, but heavy parasite loads can seriously weaken the bird, especially young birds or those already in poor condition.

Signs are often subtle at first. Gradual weight loss may be seen despite maintained appetite or, conversely, decreased appetite, dull and unkempt plumage, reduced activity and general lethargy. Droppings may become more watery or change in appearance, and sometimes small worms or worm fragments are visible to the naked eye in the stool. The abdomen may appear slightly distended. In young chicks, infestation slows growth and development.

Causes and risk factors
Several families of intestinal nematodes can parasitize the European robin, including ascarids (similar to human roundworms), capillarids, and other roundworms specific to wild birds. These parasites lay eggs that are shed in the droppings and then contaminate soil, water, or food.
Young birds, weakened, malnourished, or stressed individuals are more susceptible. Crowding around feeders and shared water sources, wet soil, high density of wild birds in the same garden, and access to areas soiled by old droppings increase the risk of infection.
Transmission
Infection usually occurs by ingestion of eggs or larvae present on soil, in contaminated water, or on prey (insects, earthworms) that have themselves harbored the parasite. The life cycle may be direct (the egg becomes infective in the environment) or indirect, via an intermediate host such as certain invertebrates that robins feed on.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on microscopic examination of droppings to look for parasite eggs (faecal examination), performed by a veterinarian or a wildlife specialist facility. Direct observation of worms in the stools may provide a clue, but only laboratory testing confirms the parasite type and assesses the severity of infestation.
Treatment
Treatment relies on administering an antiparasitic medication suited to birds, prescribed and dosed exclusively by a veterinarian experienced in wildlife medicine, because the safety margin is narrow in small songbirds. Nutritional support and rehydration may be given if the bird is weakened.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
For a free-living wild bird, direct prevention is limited. However, transmission risk can be reduced by regularly cleaning feeders and water sources provided for birds, preventing the buildup of droppings in one spot, and refreshing water frequently. For a bird brought to a wildlife care centre or kept temporarily in captivity, cage hygiene and quarantine of newcomers are essential.
Possible complications
A heavy, untreated infestation can lead to dehydration, severe weight loss, intestinal blockage in rare cases, and increased vulnerability to other diseases or predation due to general weakness.
When to see a veterinarian
A robin found to be thin, lethargic, or unable to fly properly.
Visible worms in the bird's droppings.
Persistent diarrhoea or marked change in the appearance of stools.
A young nestling that is not growing normally despite apparently being fed.
Prognosis
Prognosis is generally good if the bird is treated early by a veterinary professional with appropriate antiparasitic medication and nutritional support. With heavy infestation and advanced weakening, the prognosis becomes guarded.

Can a robin with worms still fly and feed normally?
Yes, in cases of light infestation, the bird may appear normal in appearance. It is only with a high parasitic load that fatigue and weight loss become visible.
