Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in wild boar, both in the wild and in captivity. Several species of roundworms can colonize the stomach, small intestine, or colon of the animal. The best-known is Ascaris suum, a large whitish-pink worm that can also infect domestic pigs. Other genera such as Trichuris, Oesophagostomum, Metastrongylus (lung worms), and Strongyloides are also encountered. Most adult wild boar carry a low parasite burden without visible signs, but young animals or populations at high density may develop clinical disease.

In young wild boar, heavy infestation results in progressive weight loss, dull and bristly hair coat, sometimes intermittent diarrhea, and stunted growth compared to littermates of the same age.
Affected animals may show abdominal bloating or distension, bouts of coughing if larvae migrate through the lungs, and general lethargy with decreased activity.
In severe infestations, occasional vomiting may occur, and more rarely, expulsion of visible worms in the feces or vomitus. Many adult animals remain carriers without any apparent symptoms, making detection difficult in the field.

Causes and risk factors
The condition is caused by gastrointestinal nematodes in the wild boar's digestive tract. These worms lay eggs that are shed in the feces and become infectious in the soil after a maturation period. The animal becomes infected by ingesting these eggs present in soil, water, roots, or vegetation when foraging for food. Some larvae can also migrate through tissues (lungs, liver) before reaching the intestine, causing local lesions.
Young wild boar (piglets and juveniles) are most vulnerable because their immune system is not yet fully developed. High population densities, commonly seen in areas with artificial feeding or hunting enclosures, promote the accumulation of eggs in the environment and cross-infestation. Damp, contaminated soil, nutritional stress, contact with domestic pigs or other infested wild boar, and poor sanitary conditions in captivity (parks, hunting reserves) all increase risk.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through indirect fecal-oral route: the animal ingests worm eggs present in soil, water, or vegetation contaminated by feces from infested animals. There is no direct contact necessary between individuals; contamination always occurs through the environment.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is mainly based on microscopic examination of feces, called fecal flotation or coproscopy, which detects and identifies roundworm eggs. In a dead or slaughtered animal, necropsy allows direct observation of adult worms in the digestive tract or lungs. The veterinarian may also consider the animal's general condition, age, and population context to guide diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment uses broad-spectrum antiparasitic medications (vermifuges) active against nematodes. Choice of product and administration method are determined solely by the veterinarian, particularly in wild fauna where animal access is limited. In captive or hunting enclosure settings, herd-level treatment may be considered under veterinary supervision.

Prevention
Managing population density by avoiding overcrowding in enclosures or feeding areas limits parasite accumulation in the environment. Regular cleaning of bedding and feeding areas in captivity reduces the load of infective eggs in the soil. Rotating grazing or feeding areas, where feasible, helps break the parasite cycle. Regular veterinary monitoring with fecal examinations allows assessment of parasite burden in a population and guides targeted interventions.
Possible complications
Severe, untreated infestation in a young animal can cause lasting stunted growth, general weakening that allows secondary infections, and in extreme cases fatal outcomes from dehydration or intestinal obstruction caused by worm masses. Migration of larvae into the lungs can also cause secondary respiratory lesions.

Prognosis
The outlook is generally favourable in adult animals, which are often asymptomatic carriers able to tolerate a moderate parasite burden. In young animals or in cases of heavy infestation, the outlook depends on how quickly treatment is started: early treatment allows complete recovery, while delays can result in growth defects or death in the most vulnerable animals.

Can an infested wild boar contaminate a neighbouring pig farm?
Yes, certain parasites such as Ascaris suum are common to wild boar and domestic pigs. Indirect contact via shared soil or proximity of pens can promote cross-transmission, hence the importance of biosecurity measures between wildlife and farming operations.
Should wild boars in captivity be systematically dewormed?
