The Caligus genus is most frequently encountered in sea bass, but other copepods can also be involved.\n\nThis parasitosis mainly affects aquaculture farms with a high density of fish, where the parasites circulate easily from one individual to another. Their life cycle has several stages, some free in the water, others attached to the fish.
The high density of fish in cages or ponds favors transmission from one individual to another.\n\nHot water accelerates the development cycle of parasites, which increases the risk in summer.\n\nPre-existing stress, poor water quality or weakened immunity make fish more vulnerable to a significant infestation.\n\nThe proximity of several breeding sites or an area naturally rich in wild fish carriers can also favor the introduction of the parasite.
Transmission
The parasites are transmitted by direct contact between fish or via free stages swimming in the water, which then attach to a new host. The transfer of infested fish from one site to another is an important route of spread.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Prevention
