Fin rot is a common bacterial infection in guppies. It attacks the edge of the fins, which gradually frays and disintegrates. Without intervention, the infection can travel back to the fish's body and become fatal. It is one of the most common diseases in aquariums, especially when the water is of poor quality.

The fins, especially the caudal and dorsal, have frayed, ragged or eaten away edges, sometimes whitish or reddish at the margins. The fabric may appear to be crumbling in patches. \n\nOver time, the fins visibly shorten and lose their normal shape. \n\nThe fish may become listless, stay hidden or near the surface, and eat less well. In advanced cases, the base of the fin or body may turn red, a sign that the infection is progressing to the skin.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by opportunistic bacteria, most often of the genus Aeromonas, Pseudomonas or Flavobacterium, naturally present in water. These bacteria take advantage of a drop in the fish's defenses or an existing injury to invade the fin tissue. \n\nA fungus can sometimes be added to the bacterial infection, especially if treatment is delayed.
Poor quality water, with excess ammonia, nitrites or organic matter, is the main risk factor. An overcrowded aquarium, lack of maintenance or too infrequent water changes also promote the disease. \n\nStress plays a big role: unsuitable temperature, recent transport, fights between fish or fins already bitten by fellow fish weaken the guppy's natural defenses. \n\nLong-sailed guppies, much appreciated for their beauty, are more exposed because their extended fins are more fragile and more often damaged during social interactions.
Transmission
Transmission is not direct from one fish to another like a classic contagious disease; it depends above all on the presence of bacteria in the water and the state of health of each fish.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Identification is done by direct observation of the appearance of the fins. A veterinarian specializing in exotic animals or an experienced aquarist can assess the severity and rule out other causes such as aggression by a conspecific or an associated parasitic disease.
Treatment

Prevention
Maintaining clean water is the best prevention: regular water changes, effective filtration and monitoring of parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates). \n\nAvoiding overpopulation and limiting fish stress also helps preserve its natural defenses. \n\nQuarantining any new fish before introducing them into the main aquarium helps avoid bringing in pathogenic bacteria.
Possible complications
If the infection is left untreated, it can reach the base of the fins and then the body of the fish, causing more serious skin lesions and potentially fatal septicemia. Heavily damaged fins may never return to their original shape, even after healing.

The edges of the fins become frayed or change color.\nThe fish remains hidden, still, or unusually close to the surface.\nThe redness or infection appears to be moving closer to the body.\nSeveral fish in the aquarium show the same signs.
Prognosis
The prognosis is good if the disease is detected early and the water quality is corrected quickly. The fins can partially grow back. On the other hand, if the infection reaches the body of the fish, the prognosis becomes more guarded.

Will my guppy's fins grow back?
Yes, often, if the infection is treated in time and the water is of good quality. Regrowth can take several weeks and the result is not always identical to the original appearance.
Is fin rot contagious to other fish?
The responsible bacteria are already present in the water of most aquariums. The risk of spread depends mainly on water quality and general stress of the fish rather than direct contact.
Can I treat my guppy without outside advice?
It is possible to act quickly on the quality of the water yourself, but when choosing an antibacterial treatment, the advice of a professional or a specialized pet store is recommended to avoid worsening the situation.
How to differentiate fin rot from a simple bite between fish?
A bite often leaves a clean edge and does not worsen over time, while rot progresses and results in a frayed or discolored appearance that spreads.
