Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by parasitic blood protozoans (piroplasms) that invade and destroy red blood cells. These parasites are transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, which act as biological vectors. Infection therefore occurs mainly in areas where ticks are present in significant numbers, particularly during warm seasons and in wooded or grassy habitats frequented by these cervids.

Animals living in enclosures or in captivity in tick-infested areas face the greatest exposure, as they cannot escape bites. Contact with wild fauna carrying infected ticks, combined with the absence of regular parasite control, increases the risk of infection.
