Piroplasmosis is a blood parasitic disease caused by microorganisms called Babesia or Theileria. These parasites invade the animal's red blood cells and gradually destroy them. In the Himalayan tahr, a wild caprine species occasionally kept in zoos or wildlife reserves, this tick-transmitted disease can cause severe anemia. It also affects many other domestic and wild ruminants around the world.

The most common signs are marked fever, general depression, and loss of appetite.

As red blood cells are destroyed, the animal develops anemia: its mucous membranes (gums, conjunctivae) become pale instead of pink.

In more advanced cases, the urine may become dark, almost reddish, due to massive destruction of red blood cells. Jaundice (yellowish discoloration of the mucous membranes) may also appear.

The animal loses weight, tires easily, and may have difficulty breathing if anemia is severe.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by microscopic blood parasites of the genus Babesia or Theileria, depending on the region. These parasites are transmitted through the bite of infected ticks when they feed on the animal's blood.

Tahrs living in tick-infested areas, particularly in outdoor enclosures or nature reserves with dense vegetation, face the highest risk.

Young animals, weakened or stressed individuals (from transport, environmental changes) and those with compromised immune systems are more susceptible to severe disease.

The presence of other ruminants or animals that harbour the parasite in the environment increases transmission risk through ticks.

Transmission

Transmission occurs only through the bite of infected ticks; there is no direct contagion from one animal to another.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

A veterinarian suspects piroplasmosis when fever is associated with anaemia in an animal exposed to ticks. Diagnosis is based on a blood test: direct observation of the parasite within red blood cells under a microscope, or more specific tests (serology, PCR) performed by a specialist laboratory.

A complete blood sample also allows assessment of the severity of anaemia and the animal's general condition.

Treatment

Treatment relies on specific antiparasitic medications targeted at Babesia or Theileria, prescribed only by a veterinarian.

Support care is often necessary: fluids to manage dehydration, and in severe cases, blood transfusion to correct severe anaemia.

External antiparasitic treatment is also implemented to eliminate ticks present on the animal and prevent reinfection.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Tick control is the primary prevention measure: regular external antiparasitic treatments and maintenance of enclosures and pastures to reduce vegetation favourable to ticks.

Regular examination of the animal's coat allows ticks to be spotted and removed promptly, before they transmit the parasite.

Limiting contact with areas or animals known to harbour infected tick populations also reduces risk.

Possible complications

Untreated severe anaemia can lead to multiple organ failure, particularly affecting the kidneys and liver, due to tissue oxygen deprivation.

In the most severe cases, the disease can be fatal, particularly in young, weakened animals or those already stressed by other factors.

When to see a veterinarian

The animal has a fever along with unusual lethargy.

The mucous membranes (gums, conjunctiva) appear pale or yellowish.

The urine is abnormally dark or reddish in color.

The animal refuses to eat for more than a day.

Ticks are visible in large numbers on the coat.

Prognosis

The prognosis depends on how quickly treatment is started. When diagnosed and treated early, piroplasmosis carries a favorable prognosis in many cases.

However, a severe form with significant anemia or organ complications can be life-threatening, especially in an animal that is already weakened.

Frequently asked questions

Can Theileriosis in Tahrs be transmitted to humans?

No, the parasites responsible for piroplasmosis in ruminants such as the tahr are not considered transmissible to humans. The zoonotic risk is considered to be nil or negligible.

How does a tahr catch this disease?

Transmission occurs only through the bite of an infected tick that has previously bitten an animal carrying the parasite. There is no direct contagion between animals.

Can the disease be completely prevented in a captive tahr?

We cannot guarantee complete prevention, but good tick management in the enclosure and regular coat inspections significantly reduce the risk of transmission.

Can a healed tahr fall ill again?

Some treated animals remain carriers of the parasite at low levels without clinical signs and may develop the disease again in cases of stress or immune system weakness.
