Tahr pneumonia is a lung infection affecting the Himalayan tahr, a wild goat native to Asian mountains but also found in some zoos and wildlife reserves. This respiratory disease is usually caused by bacteria, sometimes triggered or worsened by viruses or stress. It can progress rapidly, especially in young animals or those in poor condition, and is a major cause of death in captive and introduced populations.
As in other wild caprines, overcrowding, stress from captivity or transport, and sudden climate changes are frequent triggers.

Causes and risk factors

Stress, cold damp conditions, poor enclosure ventilation, or recent transport are factors that promote disease in this sensitive species.

Sudden temperature changes, excessive humidity, and chronic stress from captivity also increase the risk.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through the respiratory route, via droplets released when coughing or sneezing, and is facilitated by close contact between animals.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian bases diagnosis on clinical examination, lung auscultation, and observation of respiratory symptoms. Further tests such as chest radiography, blood work, or samples from the respiratory tract may be performed to identify the causative agent and tailor treatment.
Treatment
Treatment typically relies on antibiotics tailored to the identified bacterial agent, combined with anti-inflammatory medication if needed to ease breathing. Supportive care, such as rehydration and keeping the animal calm in a suitable environment, is part of the management.

Prevention
Good ventilation in enclosures, reasonable animal density, and stress management during transport or environmental changes help reduce risk.
Regular veterinary monitoring allows early detection of the first signs of respiratory disease and isolation of sick animals before infection spreads to the group.
Possible complications
Without prompt treatment, the infection can develop into severe pneumonia with respiratory failure, or even death. Chronic lung complications are possible in animals that survive a severe form of the disease.
