Beluga pneumonia is an infectious inflammation of the lungs affecting beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas), both in the wild and in dolphinariums. \nIt is often caused by opportunistic bacteria which take advantage of a weakening of the animal (stress, injury, parasite, degraded environment) to invade the respiratory tract. \nIt is a serious disease in cetaceans because these animals depend on efficient breathing to surface, move and avoid drowning in the event of respiratory distress.

Signs are often subtle at first, making detection difficult in an aquatic animal. \nWe may observe faster, noisier or irregular breathing each time we come to the surface (the blowing from the blowhole becomes abnormal). \nThe animal shows fatigue, swims less actively, stays still more often or isolates itself from the group. \nA loss of appetite and progressive weight loss are common. \nIn advanced cases, the animal may present with a fever, cough or visible sputum at the blowhole, and marked difficulty maintaining buoyancy.

Causes and risk factors
The causative agents are mainly bacteria (e.g. Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, Aeromonas or other bacteria of environmental or opportunistic origin). \nViral or fungal infections (such as certain pulmonary mycoses) can also be the cause or complicate an initial bacterial infection. \nContamination generally occurs by inhalation of bacteria present in water or ambient air, especially when the animal's immune system is weakened.
Stress linked to captivity, transport or tense social interactions weakens the immune system. \nPoor quality water, poorly filtered or poorly treated, promotes the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria. \nSkin injuries or immunosuppression linked to another chronic illness increase vulnerability. \nYoung animals, elderly individuals and those weakened by a parasitic disease are more exposed.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on observation of respiratory behavior and auscultation when possible. \nSamples (blood, secretions from the vent) make it possible to identify the infectious agent in the laboratory. \nImaging (ultrasound, or even x-ray in certain specialized centers) helps to assess the extent of lung damage. \nA bacteriological analysis with sensitivity test guides the choice of treatment.
Treatment
Treatment is mainly based on antibiotic therapy adapted to the bacteria identified, combined if necessary with antifungal treatment in the event of a concomitant fungal infection. \nSupportive care (hydration, reinforced nutritional intake, anti-inflammatories) accompanies the causal treatment. \nThe treatment is carried out under close specialized veterinary monitoring, with the animal being continuously monitored during treatment.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining excellent water quality (filtration, disinfection, regular bacteriological monitoring) is the most important preventive measure in a managed environment. \nReducing stress through a suitable environment and behavioral enrichment limits immune weakening. \nRegular veterinary monitoring with health checks makes it possible to detect early signs before worsening. \nIn a natural environment, preserving the water quality of oceans and estuaries is the main lever for prevention.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can progress to severe respiratory distress, septicemia (spread of the infection throughout the body) or death. \nThe loss of buoyancy and the ability to return to the surface to breathe constitutes a vital emergency for the beluga.

Abnormally rapid, noisy, or irregular breathing through the vent.
Unusual fatigue, isolation or reduced swimming activity.
Persistent loss of appetite or visible weight loss.
Any abnormal respiratory behavior in a captive or stranded animal must be reported immediately to a veterinarian specializing in marine wildlife.
Prognosis
The prognosis depends on the speed of treatment and the infectious agent involved. \nPneumonia detected early and treated with appropriate antibiotic therapy has a favorable prognosis. \nOn the other hand, advanced infection, septicemia or extensive lung damage clearly worsens the prognosis, with pneumonia remaining a frequent cause of mortality in captive and stranded cetaceans.

Is beluga pneumonia contagious to humans?
No, it is not a disease transmissible to humans under usual contact conditions. However, certain bacteria involved may be present in the aquatic environment, hence the importance of good hygiene practices for personnel in contact with the animal.
How to detect pneumonia in a beluga when it lives in the water?
Keepers and veterinarians mainly observe behavior at the blowhole (noise, frequency of breathing), level of swimming activity and appetite. Regular samples also allow early detection.
Can a stranded wild beluga whale with breathing difficulties be saved?
