This disease is recognized as one of the main causes of death in reintroduced European bison populations, particularly during winter or after significant stress (transport, capture, change of herd).
It can affect a single animal or occur in small outbreaks within a group, particularly in young or weakened individuals.

The affected animal coughs, breathes more rapidly or with difficulty, and may have discharge from the nose.

In severe cases, the bison may stay away from the herd, breathe through the mouth or in gasps, and show considerable weakness. Death can occur quickly if the lungs are severely affected, sometimes with few visible signs beforehand in an animal naturally inclined to hide illness.

Transmission occurs mainly through the respiratory route, via droplets released during coughing or nasal secretions, made more likely by close contact between animals.
Diagnosis and care

The veterinarian assesses the animal's general condition, breathing, and behavior, often from a distance or during capture if necessary in this wild species.

Minimizing stress during handling, transport, and grouping of animals is a key prevention measure.
Regular monitoring of herd health, with particular attention to isolated or lethargic animals, allows early detection.
Maintaining reasonable population density in reserves and ensuring access to good quality feed strengthens the natural resistance of animals against respiratory infections.
Possible complications
Untreated pneumonia can progress to severe lung involvement, septicemia (generalized infection), or death.
Chronic lung sequelae may persist in surviving animals, making them more vulnerable long-term.
Within a herd, the disease can spread to other individuals, especially during periods of high density or collective stress.

The animal stays apart from the herd, listless and unresponsive.
