What is it?

Roundworms, or nematodes, are internal parasites frequently encountered in perch (Perca fluviatilis), whether they live in a natural environment, in a pond or in a breeding tank.\nThese worms settle mainly in the digestive tract of the fish, sometimes also in other internal organs such as the liver or muscles depending on the species in question.\nMost of the time, a light infestation goes unnoticed. However, a heavily infested fish may show visible signs and see its general health decline.

A perch parasitized by roundworms often shows no external signs, especially if the infestation remains moderate.\nWhen the worms are numerous, we may observe a progressive weight loss despite a preserved appetite, or on the contrary a loss of appetite.\nThe fish may become more lethargic, swim less vigorously or stay away from the group.\nIn some cases, swelling of the abdomen appears, or worms may be visible to the naked eye, coiled under the skin or exiting through the anus.\nDamaged skin, redness or small lesions can also accompany a significant infestation, especially when the larvae migrate into the tissues.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is due to nematodes, non-segmented roundworms, which use the perch as an intermediate or definitive host depending on the parasitic species involved.\nThe life cycle of these parasites often involves several successive hosts: small crustaceans or aquatic invertebrates ingested by the perch, then sometimes a piscivorous bird or another predatory fish which closes the cycle.\nThe perch becomes infested by feeding on prey carrying larvae, such as aquatic invertebrates (copepods, insect larvae) present in its natural environment.

Bodies of water rich in intermediate invertebrates, piscivorous birds or predatory fish favor the transmission of roundworms.\nA high density of fish in a basin or pond increases the risk of transmission and reinfestation.\nA degraded living environment, poor water quality or chronic stress weaken the natural defenses of the fish and make the infestation more severe.\nWild perch from natural environments rich in biodiversity are more regularly exposed than fish raised in a closed circuit and controlled.

Transmission

Transmission occurs by ingestion of prey (aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans) carrying nematode larvae. The cycle may involve several intermediate hosts before reaching the perch.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis is most often based on direct observation of worms during examination of the fish or during an autopsy, particularly when worms are visible under the skin or in the stool.\nA veterinarian specializing in fish farming or aquatic animals can perform a stool examination, smear or dissection to identify parasites and estimate the extent of the infestation.\nIn a farm or collective pond context, a post-mortem examination of a dead fish can help to confirm the diagnosis for the rest of the group.

Treatment

Treatment is based on antiparasitics specific to nematodes, administered under veterinary supervision, adapted to the particular biology of the fish.\nIn certain cases, an improvement in rearing conditions (water quality, reduction of stress, diet) is sufficient to limit the consequences of a light infestation without drug treatment.\nTreatment of the living environment (basin, pond) can also be considered to reduce the overall parasitic load and limit reinfestation.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

There is no systematic preventive treatment for fish in a natural environment.\nIn a pond or in breeding ponds, good management of water quality, a reasonable fish density and an appropriate diet limit the risk of infestation and strengthen the resistance of fish.\nLimiting the access of piscivorous birds to breeding ponds, when possible, reduces the transmission loop of the parasite.\nAround forty of the new fish introduced into a pond or an aquarium makes it possible to identify a infestation before it spreads.

Possible complications

A massive, unmanaged infestation can lead to general debilitation, severe weight loss, and increased vulnerability to other secondary diseases or infections.\nIn rare cases, significant internal damage caused by migrating larvae can affect the function of vital organs.\nA severe infestation in a rearing tank can affect the growth and overall survival of the fish group.

When to see a veterinarian

The fish visibly loses weight despite a normal or retained appetite.\nWorms are visible on the body, under the skin or near the anus of the fish.\nThe fish swims abnormally, stays away, or appears despondent.\nSeveral fish in the same tank or pond show similar signs at the same time.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally favorable for light to moderate infestations, especially if the fish's living conditions are good.\nSevere or neglected infestations can permanently affect the health and growth of the fish, or even lead to its death in the most serious cases.\nRapid treatment and improvement of the living environment clearly improve the chances of recovery.

Are perch roundworms dangerous for humans?

Most perch nematodes are specific to fish or aquatic fauna and do not represent a known direct risk to humans during normal handling. However, it is still recommended to cook the fish well before consumption, as with any fishing.

Can we see worms with the naked eye?

Yes, in large infestations, some roundworms may be visible under the skin, in the abdominal cavity during dissection, or sometimes exiting through the fish's anus.
