Presentation
The common Perch (Perca fluviatilis) is a freshwater fish widespread in Europe and temperate Asia. It is distinguished by its stocky body, its dark vertical bands and its reddish spiny fins. This carnivorous fish lives in schools, especially in the juvenile stage, and frequents calm or moderately flowing waters. It is very appreciated by sport fishermen for its combativeness and its fine flesh. The species does not occur naturally in Tunisia but has been introduced into certain freshwater bodies in the past.
The body of Perch is tall and slightly laterally compressed, covered with rough scales. It has two distinct dorsal fins, the first bearing hard spiny rays. Its greenish to golden coloring is marked with 5 to 9 dark vertical bands, with orange pelvic and anal fins.
Characteristics
Indicative values: they vary by subspecies, sex and region.
Habitat and distribution
The Perch favors lakes, ponds, slow-moving rivers and canals rich in aquatic vegetation. It looks for sheltered areas such as seagrass beds, submerged roots and banks cluttered with dead wood. It tolerates a wide range of water qualities, which explains its wide distribution.
CURRENT RANGE
The species is native to Europe and temperate Asia, where it is widely distributed in fresh waters. It has been introduced to many other parts of the world, including parts of North Africa and Oceania, for sport fishing purposes. Its presence outside its natural area mainly results from voluntary introductions.
Behaviour
Perch is a gregarious species, especially among young individuals who form large schools. Adults become more solitary and territorial, especially when hunting. It is active mainly during the day and takes refuge at night near submerged structures such as roots or rocks.
Reproduction
Reproduction takes place in spring, when the water temperature reaches around 8 to 10°C. The female lays long ribbons of gelatinous eggs attached to aquatic vegetation or submerged branches. No parental care is provided after spawning, and the larvae hatch after one to three weeks depending on temperature.
Peculiarities
The Perch has sharp dorsal spines which effectively protect it from predators. It can change color slightly depending on its environment and state of stress. It is one of the most popular freshwater recreational fishing species in Europe.
Threats and conservation
Perch is not considered globally threatened and its populations remain generally stable. Water pollution and degradation of aquatic habitats can locally affect certain populations. Recreational overfishing generally remains regulated by quotas in many countries.
