A murder with no witnesses troubles the Children of Israel. To uncover the truth, Allah commands them an extraordinary act: to sacrifice a specific cow, described with such precision that the very description becomes a test of faith.
Among the Children of Israel, a man was killed without anyone knowing who had committed the crime. Each blamed the other, and doubt grew within the community. To solve this mystery, Moses (Moussa), on Allah's command, conveyed to them an instruction that would astonish them deeply: to sacrifice a cow.
A simple request that becomes a trial
Rather than simply accepting this order, the Children of Israel began to ask many questions about the colour, age, and characteristics of the animal. This attitude is reported in Surah Al-Baqara, which takes its name—"The Cow"—from this very episode.
﴿ وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تَذْبَحُوا بَقَرَةً ۖ قَالُوا أَتَتَّخِذُنَا هُزُوًا ۖ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ ﴾
"And when Moses said to his people: 'Allah commands you to sacrifice a cow.' They said: 'Do you take us in jest?' He said: 'I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant!'"
(Surah Al-Baqara, verse 67)
Questions upon questions
Rather than obey with simplicity, the people asked for details about the age of the cow, then about its colour. They were told it should be bright yellow, radiant, pleasing to look upon. But the questions did not end there: they wished to know further whether it had been broken in to plough the earth or to carry loads, or whether it had never been put to such uses.
According to the Quranic account, the final description specified that it was a cow that had never been subjected to ploughing or watering the fields, without blemish, entirely of one colour. Only after this long series of demands did they finally find the animal matching the description and sacrifice it, though as the verse emphasises, they nearly failed to do so.
The truth revealed
Once the sacrifice was completed, they were ordered to strike the body of the dead man with a part of the cow. By Allah's leave, the dead man was brought back to life for the moment needed to reveal the identity of his killer, before returning to his former state. This miracle, reported in the same surah, showed all people the power of the Creator over life and death, and reminded them that nothing escapes His knowledge, even acts committed in the deepest secrecy.
This account also teaches a lesson about how to receive divine commands: the Children of Israel, by multiplying questions through excessive caution or hesitation, complicated for themselves a task that could have remained simple. Scholars of interpretation often emphasise that it would have been easy to sacrifice any cow matching the initial order, without this meticulous search that delayed the fulfilment of the truth.
An animal at the heart of a spiritual lesson
It is worth noting that this animal, so ordinary in the daily life of the agricultural societies of that time, becomes here the vehicle of a profound teaching about faith, obedience, and trust in divine wisdom. The cow is not chosen by chance: it was a useful animal, respected, often associated with the work of the earth and the subsistence of families.
This story reminds us that animals hold a particular place in sacred narratives, sometimes as simple creatures of daily life, sometimes as central elements of a teaching. It also invites us to reflect on the value that every living being possesses: the cow, like every animal, deserves to be treated with respect and without cruelty, whether in its raising, its use for work, or, if need be, its ritual slaughter, which in the Islamic tradition must always be accompanied by gentleness and consideration for the creature.
