The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once told his companions the story of a woman known for her wicked conduct. One day, as she walked through the desert, she came upon a well. Thirst drove her to approach it to drink. But near the well, she saw a dog circling the water, its tongue hanging out, dying of thirst, licking the damp earth hoping to find a few drops of water.

An Unexpected Act of Compassion

The heart of this woman was moved by the animal's distress. She understood that the suffering of this creature was real, despite its humble condition as a mere stray dog. Without hesitation, she removed her shoe, tied it with her scarf, and descended into the well to draw water. She climbed back up with difficulty, holding her shoe filled with water, and gave the thirsty dog to drink until its thirst was quenched.

This gesture, accomplished with no witness other than God, with no expectation of reward or recognition, was seen and accepted by Allah. The Prophet ﷺ concluded his account by explaining that God forgave her sins for this act of mercy toward a living creature.

This hadith is related in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, two of the most authentic and most respected collections of hadith in the Islamic tradition. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ, upon hearing this account, were astonished that such a simple act toward an animal could merit such divine forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ then taught them that in every living being possessed of a moist liver—that is, every living being in need of water to survive—there is a reward for doing good.

A Universal Lesson

This story illustrates a fundamental principle of Islamic ethics: mercy is not limited to human beings. It extends to all of creation, including the most humble animals, those whom society sometimes despises or neglects, such as a stray dog in certain cultures. The Prophet ﷺ thus reminded us that kindness done to an animal is never a lost or insignificant act in the sight of God.

It is reported that conversely, in another authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ spoke of a woman who was punished for allowing a cat she had locked up to starve, without feeding it or allowing it to hunt freely to fend for itself. These two accounts, taken together, show how seriously responsibility toward animals is regarded in prophetic teaching: kindness is rewarded, cruelty is condemned.

This story teaches us that compassion toward animals is never a trivial gesture. Giving water to a thirsty creature, feeding a hungry animal, relieving the suffering of any living being, are acts that truly matter. Even today, this teaching invites each of us to turn a thoughtful and kind gaze upon the animals we encounter, whether domestic or stray, for every gesture of gentleness toward them echoes far beyond the moment in which it is accomplished.
