Giving animals water during heat waves

Under a blazing sun, a thirsty traveler finds a well, then notices a panting dog. This simple act, reported by the Prophet ﷺ, shows what a sip of water offered to a creature in distress is worth.

The sun beat down on the road, and the ground burned under the feet of a man walking alone. According to a hadith reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ related that this man was seized by a severe thirst. He saw a well, climbed down into it, drank until his thirst was quenched, and then climbed back out.

A dog on the edge of thirst

As he came out of the well, he saw a dog panting and licking the damp earth, so tormented was it by thirst. The man then thought that this dog was suffering from the same thirst he had just experienced himself.

He went back down into the well and filled his khuff, a leather shoe that covers the foot. He held it in his mouth to climb back up, then gave the dog a drink. According to the hadith, Allah accepted his deed, thanked him for it, and forgave him.

The Companions, surprised, asked: "O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for us in what we do for animals?" He ﷺ replied, according to Sahih al-Bukhari, that there is a reward for every living creature, literally "every moist liver". No animal is therefore too humble to deserve relief.

Water, a shared right

The Quran itself reminds us of the importance of water shared with animals. In Surah Ash-Shu'ara, the Prophet Salih shows his people the she-camel sent as a sign, and sets a turn of water for her and a turn for them:

﴿ قَالَ هَٰذِهِ نَاقَةٌ لَّهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ ﴾

He said: "This is a she-camel: for her a share of water, and for you a share of water, on a appointed day."

(Surah Ash-Shu'ara, verse 155)

Thus, in this account as in the hadith of the well, the water source does not belong only to humans: living creatures have their share in it.

What these accounts whisper to us

In the summer heat, birds look for a thread of shade, stray cats watch for a puddle, and dogs, like farm animals, have dry throats. The traveler in the hadith did nothing extraordinary: he recognized himself in the suffering of another living being, and he acted. His effort, going down into the well a second time, shows that mercy sometimes requires a little hardship.

Setting out a bowl of fresh water in the shade, filling a trough, making sure the animals in our care do not lack water: these simple acts fit within this teaching. At TunisieVet, we like to remind people that kindness toward animals often begins with an offered sip of water, and Allah knows the worth of even the smallest acts of goodness.
