Sea bass anisakiosis is a parasitic infestation caused by larvae of a roundworm called Anisakis. \nThis parasite lives naturally in many marine fish, including sea bass. \nThe larvae live mainly in the abdominal cavity, around the digestive organs, and sometimes in the flesh of the fish. \nThis disease concerns both aquaculture farming and wild fish caught at sea. \nIt represents above all a public health issue, because humans can become infected by consuming raw or poorly cooked fish containing these live larvae.

In sea bass, the infestation often remains discreet and frequently goes unnoticed by the naked eye. \nIn the event of a high parasite load, we may observe a less lively fish, which swims abnormally or stays behind the group. \nA loss of appetite and progressive weight loss are possible in the most affected fish. \nOn examination after opening the fish, we find whitish larvae, coiled in a spiral, visible to the naked eye on the wall of the abdominal cavity or on the liver and viscera. \nIn certain severe cases, local inflammation of the digestive wall may appear around the larvae attachment points.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by larvae of nematodes (roundworms) of the genus Anisakis, mainly Anisakis simplex. \nThe cycle of this parasite is complex and involves several successive hosts. \nThe eggs are released into sea water by marine mammals (dolphins, seals, cetaceans) which harbor the adult worm in their digestive tract. \nThe released larvae are then ingested by small crustaceans, then by fish such as bass which feed on these crustaceans or small fish already infested. \nThe sea bass plays the role of intermediate or paratenic host: the larva remains alive in its flesh and viscera without becoming an adult, waiting to be eaten by a marine mammal, or accidentally by man.
Wild bass are generally more exposed than farmed bass, because their natural diet includes prey already carrying larvae. \nProximity to areas frequented by marine mammals increases the risk of infestation. \nIn aquaculture, the use of insufficiently controlled whole fish feeds can introduce the parasite. \nThe size and age of the fish also play a role: older and larger subjects, having had more time to accumulate larvae through their diet, are often more affected.
Transmission
Bass become infested by consuming prey (crustaceans, small fish) already carrying Anisakis larvae. \nThere is no direct transmission between fish; the cycle requires passage through multiple hosts in the marine food chain, with marine mammals as definitive hosts.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
In live fish, diagnosis is difficult because the clinical signs are not very specific. \nDiagnosis is most often made after capture or slaughter, during evisceration, by direct observation of the larvae rolled up in the abdominal cavity. \nA veterinarian specializing in fish pathology or a health check can confirm the presence of the parasite by visual examination or by laboratory techniques such as transillumination or molecular analysis. \nThese examinations are mainly carried out within the framework of health control and food safety, rather than to treat a fish individually.
Treatment
There is no curative antiparasitic treatment routinely applied to bass infested with Anisakis. \nManagement is essentially based on prevention, health control and sorting of fish during evisceration. \nIn aquaculture, improving the quality and traceability of the feed distributed to fish makes it possible to limit the introduction of the parasite into farms.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
In breeding, it is recommended to use controlled compound feed rather than whole, unprocessed fish. \nRegular health monitoring of batches, particularly during evisceration, makes it possible to identify the possible presence of larvae. \nFor consumer safety, freezing fish at a sufficiently low temperature for a suitable period of time kills Anisakis larvae; This step is obligatory in many countries for fish intended to be consumed raw or lightly cooked (sushi, carpaccio, marinades). \nComplete and sufficient cooking of the fish also eliminates the risk.
Possible complications
In the sea bass itself, direct complications generally remain limited, unless there is a massive infestation which can lead to digestive inflammation. \nThe main issue concerns human health: the consumption of raw or insufficiently cooked infested fish can cause human anisakiosis, with abdominal pain, vomiting, and even sometimes severe allergic reactions in sensitized people.

Transmission to humans
Anisakiosis is a recognized zoonosis: humans can become infected by eating raw, marinated or cold-smoked fish containing live larvae. \nIn humans, it can cause acute digestive disorders (pain, nausea, vomiting) in the hours following a meal, and sometimes allergic reactions, sometimes severe, even without an active infestation. \nProperly freezing fish or cooking it thoroughly before consumption removes this risk.
Prognosis
For the bass itself, the prognosis is generally good: the infestation is most often well tolerated and does not cause significant mortality. \nThe real issue is not the health of the fish but the health safety of the flesh intended for human consumption.
