What is it?

Heat stroke occurs when the body temperature rises beyond what the body can evacuate. The cat regulates its heat poorly: it hardly sweats and cools itself mainly by grooming itself and seeking shade.

A cat panting with its mouth open is never normal: in this species, it is already an alarm signal.

Heatstroke does not only affect the temperature: it damages the brain, kidneys, liver and coagulation. It is a vital emergency, particularly relevant during Tunisian summers.

Key point

Vital emergency. A cat that is panting with its mouth open should be considered in distress and seen by a veterinarian.

Commonly observed signs

These signs are neither exhaustive nor specific. Only a veterinarian can establish a diagnosis.

Related signs — each one links to its page:

Rapid breathing, then open-mouth panting: an abnormal sign in cats.

Profuse salivation, sometimes thick.

Agitation, desperate search for a cool place, then despondency.

Gums very red at first, pale or gray when the condition deteriorates.

Vomiting, sometimes diarrhea.

Staggering gait, tremors, disorientation.

In severe forms: convulsions, lying cat that does not get up, loss of consciousness.

The body feels hot to the touch, especially the ears and pads.

When to consult without delay

This list does not replace veterinary advice. It gathers situations that justify a prompt consultation.

Causes and risk factors

Cat locked in a car, even for a few minutes and even in the shade.

Cat left on a balcony, terrace, veranda or shed without shade or water.

Cat locked by mistake in a closed room, a shed, a cupboard or a washing machine.

Transport in poorly ventilated crate, exposed to the sun.

Heatwave in poorly ventilated accommodation, with no accessible water point.

Intense effort or stress in high heat, for example a cat panicking in its crate.

Cat with a flattened face, like the Persian or the Exotic shorthair: its breathing dissipates heat less well.

Elderly cat, kitten, overweight cat.

Cat suffering from heart, respiratory tract or kidneys.

Long, dark coat.

Lack of permanently available fresh water.

Heatwave periods and attic accommodation.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

1

This is a life-threatening emergency. Call a veterinarian immediately and let them know you are arriving.

2

In the meantime, place the cat in a cool, ventilated room in the shade.

3

Wet it with cool water — never ice cold — paying particular attention to the stomach, inner thighs, pads and neck, and let a fan circulate the air.

4

Offer him water at room temperature if he is conscious and able to drink, but never force a downed cat to drink: he risks passing water into his lungs.

5

Do not use ice or ice baths: sudden cooling constricts the vessels and aggravates the situation.

6

Even if the cat seems to be better after cooling, it must be examined: internal complications appear in the hours that follow.

Treatment

In the clinic, cooling is continued in a controlled manner and temperature is continuously monitored.

The cat receives an infusion to correct dehydration and support circulation, and oxygen if necessary.

Blood tests assess damage to the kidneys, liver and coagulation.

Treatment of convulsions, vomiting and digestive lesions is added depending on the case.

Hospitalization of at least twenty-four to forty-eight hours is usual for marked forms.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Never leave a cat in a parked car, regardless of the length of time or the weather.

Systematically check balconies, terraces, sheds, garages and washing machines before closing.

Leave several points of fresh water in the accommodation and renew them during the day.

Keep a cool, accessible room, shutters closed during hot hours, with tiled floors where the cat can lie down.

Avoid transport during the hottest hours; When traveling, use a well-ventilated box and a damp cloth on top, never a thick cloth that blocks the air.

Brush long-haired cats regularly to lighten the undercoat.

Possible complications

Brain damage, with convulsions and sometimes permanent nervous after-effects.

Acute renal failure.

Liver damage and coagulation disorders, with bleeding.

Damage to the digestive tract, bloody diarrhea.

Failure of multiple organs, which may occur even after apparent improvement.

When to see a veterinarian

Your cat is panting with its mouth open: this is still abnormal, consult without delay.

He is burning, prostrate or staggering in high heat.

He was found locked in a car, garage, veranda or shed.

He vomits, drools profusely or convulses.

Its gums are very red, or on the contrary pale.

It seems to recover after cooling: have it examined the same day anyway.

Prognosis

A cat cooled properly and cared for quickly can recover completely.

The prognosis depends on the temperature reached, the duration of exposure and the state of the organs on arrival.

Forms with convulsions, coma or coagulation disorders have a guarded prognosis, including several days after the episode.

Frequently asked questions

Can I immerse my cat in ice water to cool it down quickly?

No. The brutal cold constricts the vessels in the skin and prevents heat from escaping, making heat stroke worse. Use cool water, a stream of air, and go to the vet.

My cat pants after playing: is this normal?

No, this is not common in cats. Brief panting can follow major stress or intense effort, but if it continues, returns often or occurs at rest, you should consult: this can also reveal a heart or respiratory problem.

My cat was very hot but he seems to be well: should I consult?

Yes. Damage to the kidneys, liver and coagulation often appears several hours later. An examination and blood test the same day allows action to be taken before complications arise.

How can I help my cat during a heatwave?

Shade, ventilation, several bowls of fresh fresh water, accessible cool floors, and no going out or transporting during hot times. A damp cloth placed on the ground where he can lie down is often well accepted.
