The disease is caused by viruses from the herpesvirus family, which can infect the mouth, skin, and sometimes the nervous system of the animal. This condition is monitored closely in zoological collections because it can spread rapidly between individuals and cause severe forms in young or weakened animals.

The most common signs are mouth lesions: small blisters or painful ulcers, excessive drooling, and difficulty eating or swallowing. Skin lesions (crusts, small wounds) may appear on the muzzle, lips, or other areas of the body. The animal is often tired, lethargic, eats less, and may run a fever. In more severe forms, particularly in young lemurs or immunocompromised individuals, the virus can affect the nervous system: trembling, seizures, or even rapid death may be observed. Some infected animals show no visible symptoms but remain carriers of the virus, which makes disease control within a group more difficult.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by one or more herpesviruses specific to lemurs or closely related to viruses found in other primates. Like all herpesviruses, these agents remain latent (dormant) in the body after initial infection and can reactivate later, particularly during periods of stress or reduced immune defences.
Young animals, elderly or weakened individuals, and immunocompromised lemurs (chronic illness, significant stress) are at greater risk of developing severe disease.
Group living, overcrowding, and introduction of new animals without quarantine increase the risk of spread.
Stress from transport, environmental change, or difficult cohabitation can trigger reactivation of the virus in a latent carrier.
Transmission
The virus spreads primarily through direct contact between animals: licking, biting, and contact with saliva or oral and skin lesions. Contaminated objects such as food bowls, bedding, and enrichment materials shared between individuals can also play a role in spread within a group. A latently infected animal may shed the virus intermittently without showing symptoms, which promotes silent transmission throughout a colony.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on clinical examination of oral and skin lesions, supplemented by samples (swabs from lesions, blood tests) sent to a specialized laboratory to confirm the presence of the virus.
These tests help distinguish herpesvirus infection from other causes of oral or skin lesions in lemurs.
Treatment
No treatment permanently eliminates the virus, as is the case with most herpesvirus infections.
Management is mainly supportive: wound care, pain management, feeding assistance if the animal has difficulty eating, and sometimes specific antivirals under veterinary supervision.
In cases complicated by secondary infection, antibiotic therapy may be added.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies mainly on good sanitary management of groups: systematic quarantine of any new animal before introduction, regular health monitoring, and stress reduction.
Regular cleaning and disinfection of equipment and living spaces limit the risk of indirect contamination.
No vaccine is currently available against this disease in lemurs.
Any animal showing suspicious oral or skin lesions should be isolated quickly to protect the rest of the group.

Possible complications include dehydration and weight loss related to difficulty eating, bacterial superinfection of lesions, and in severe cases neurological involvement that can be fatal, particularly in young animals.
