Dental malocclusion is a misalignment between the upper and lower teeth. In lemurs, it often affects the tooth comb, a structure formed by the lower incisors and canines angled forward, which the animal uses for grooming and eating. When this comb or the other teeth no longer fit together properly, the animal may have difficulty eating and grooming.\n\nThis condition is mainly found in captive lemurs, in zoos or wildlife care centers, where diet, genetics, and veterinary care differ from the natural environment.

The animal may chew with difficulty or unevenly, drop its food, or take longer to eat.\n\nExcessive drooling, bad breath, or visibly misaligned teeth that are worn unevenly or overlapping may be seen.\n\nThe gums may be red, swollen, or bleed slightly where the misaligned teeth contact them. Ulcers on the cheek, tongue, or palate sometimes appear where a tooth rubs continuously.\n\nAt an advanced stage, gradual weight loss can occur because the animal avoids eating normally. Grooming of the fur, normally done by the tooth comb, may also become less effective, with a neglected-looking coat.

Causes and risk factors
Malocclusion may be congenital, present from birth due to an abnormality in jaw growth or familial predisposition.\n\nIt can also be acquired: trauma (fall, blow, fighting with another animal), improperly healed jaw fracture, premature loss of a baby tooth that disrupts eruption of permanent teeth, or abnormal wear from unsuitable diet (too soft or, conversely, hard objects chewed repeatedly such as cage bars).\n\nChronic periodontal disease can also weaken the tissues supporting the teeth, causing tooth movement and secondary malocclusion.
Young animals during active tooth development are at higher risk of congenital malocclusions.\n\nCaptive life, with access to metal bars or hard surfaces to chew on, increases the risk of abnormal tooth wear or fracture.\n\nA diet that does not reflect the variety of textures in the natural diet (fruits, leaves, insects) can promote uneven tooth wear.\n\nInbred populations in captivity may show increased predisposition to jaw growth abnormalities.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian performs a thorough oral examination, often under anesthesia or light sedation because lemurs tolerate prolonged mouth handling poorly when conscious.
This examination assesses tooth alignment, gum condition, the presence of ulcerations, and the degree of wear. Dental radiographs may be taken to evaluate the roots and underlying bone and to rule out fracture or deep infection.
Treatment
Management depends on severity. It may include careful filing or grinding of dental points causing injuries, periodontal care (scaling and root planing, gum treatment), or in some cases extraction of a tooth that is severely damaged or malpositioned.
Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications are used to relieve discomfort during the acute phase, and antibiotic treatment may be prescribed if infection is present.
Nutritional support, with temporary or long-term adjustment of food texture, helps the animal continue eating properly during and after treatment.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Offering a varied diet similar to the species' natural diet, with diverse textures, promotes even tooth wear.\n\nDesigning the environment to limit facial trauma risk and avoid unsuitable hard materials to chew on (metal, hard plastic).\n\nRegular dental checks by a veterinarian specializing in exotic animals allow early detection of developing malocclusion, especially in young animals.\n\nIn captive breeding programs, avoiding reproduction between related individuals carrying known abnormalities limits the transmission of genetic predispositions.
Possible complications
Untreated malocclusion can lead to chronic mouth injuries, periodontal infections, dental abscess, or progressive weight loss from difficulty eating.
Reduced grooming can also compromise coat quality and the animal's social life, as grooming plays an important role in interactions between lemurs.
When to see a veterinarian
The animal has difficulty chewing or repeatedly drops food.
Teeth appear visibly misaligned, broken, or loose.
Excessive drooling or unusual bad breath is noticed.
Weight loss or decreased appetite persists for several days.
The coat becomes neglected with no other obvious explanation.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally favorable if malocclusion is detected early and managed appropriately. Regular monitoring often prevents the most serious complications.
In severe or neglected cases, with chronic infections or significant weight loss, the prognosis becomes more guarded and long-term management may be necessary.
