Affected red mullet show areas of red, irritated, or discolored skin, sometimes with a thickened or darkened appearance. Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through direct contact with water contaminated by bacteria, or through contact between wounded fish. The responsible bacteria are often already present in the environment and become pathogenic when the fish's defenses are weakened.
