The disease primarily affects farmed fish in ponds, aquariums, or cages, where high stocking density and stress promote its spread. In natural environments, outbreaks are rarer and usually linked to environmental stress.

This disease can progress rapidly and cause significant mortality if not treated promptly, particularly in young fish or weakened individuals.

Young seabream and newly introduced fish are more vulnerable. Poor water quality rich in organic matter, or an inadequate filtration system, also increase risk. Rapid water temperature fluctuations weaken the fish's natural defenses.
