The disease is caused by unicellular parasites of the genus Plasmodium that infect red blood cells. In bonobos, several Plasmodium species or strains have been described, some being genetically very close to Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, the main agents of human malaria.
Living in a tropical forest area where Anopheles mosquitoes are abundant is the main risk factor.
