It is an infestation of the intestine by different species of roundworms, including ascarids, strongyles, and sometimes pinworms. These parasites live in the digestive tract, feed at the animal's expense, and can interfere with digestion. Most bonobos carry some level of parasites without serious consequences, but heavy infestation can seriously weaken the animal, especially young individuals or those already in poor health.

Many parasitized bonobos show no visible signs, especially if infestation is mild. When signs do appear, diarrhea or soft stools are most common, sometimes with visible worms present. The animal may lose appetite, gradually lose weight, and become more tired or less active than usual. The coat may become dull, the belly sometimes swollen or tender to the touch. In young bonobos, heavy infestation can slow growth and make the animal more vulnerable to other diseases.

Causes and risk factors
Infestation is caused by various intestinal nematodes, including ascarids (similar to Ascaris lumbricoides), strongyles, and sometimes pinworms, which are specific to great apes or shared with other primates. Contamination occurs mainly through accidental ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment contaminated by feces, on food, soil, or handled objects.
Bonobos living in indoor or outdoor enclosures that are poorly cleaned, with high animal density, face greater exposure. Young individuals, stressed animals, sick or immunocompromised animals more readily develop severe forms of infection. Repeated contact with areas soiled by feces, inadequate hygiene of water and food stations, and warm, humid climate favoring egg survival in the environment all increase risk. In the wild, the social proximity of the group and shared feeding areas also play a role.
Transmission
Transmission is primarily fecal-oral: the animal ingests parasite eggs or larvae present in an environment contaminated by infected feces. The cycle may be direct (the egg becomes infectious in the external environment) or involve a larval phase in soil. Some of these nematodes are shared between great apes and humans, which calls for particular vigilance in zoos and conservation centers.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian suspects gastrointestinal parasitism in the presence of persistent digestive signs or unexplained weight loss. Diagnosis mainly relies on microscopic examination of feces (looking for worm eggs), sometimes repeated several days apart since egg shedding can be irregular. Additional testing (blood work, screening for anemia or inflammation) may be useful to assess the overall impact of infestation. In some cases, more precise identification of the parasite type is performed by a specialized laboratory.
Treatment
Treatment relies on administering broad-spectrum antiparasitic agents, chosen and dosed exclusively by the veterinarian based on the parasite type identified. Nutritional support and rehydration may be provided in cases of significant diarrhea or marked weight loss. Post-treatment monitoring often includes a new fecal examination to verify treatment effectiveness.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular and thorough cleaning of enclosures, water points, and feeding areas significantly limits contamination. Frequent fecal collection reduces the quantity of eggs available in the environment. Regular fecal screening tests performed by the veterinarian allow detection of infestation before clinical signs appear. Periodic preventive deworming, determined and adapted by the veterinarian according to the situation, is part of good practice in captivity. Managing animal density and rotating outdoor spaces also help break the parasite cycle.
Possible complications
Massive untreated infestation can lead to anemia, dehydration, growth retardation in young animals, and general weakening that favors other infections. In rare severe cases, intestinal obstruction related to a mass of worms has been described in great apes. An animal already weakened by another disease may experience faster deterioration in the presence of a heavy parasite load.

Transmission to humans
Some intestinal roundworms found in bonobos, particularly Ascaris species, are similar to or identical to those that can infest humans, especially animal care staff who have close contact with the animals or their droppings.
Following hygiene measures (handwashing, wearing gloves, cleaning enclosures) significantly reduces the risk of cross-transmission between great apes and humans.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when the infestation is detected early and treated with an appropriate anthelmintic.
Most bonobos recover completely after treatment and return to a clean environment.
The prognosis becomes more guarded in very young animals, already weakened individuals, or in cases of heavy parasite load associated with complications such as anemia or dehydration.
