Pigeon paramyxovirus is a highly contagious viral disease that affects rock pigeons and racing pigeons worldwide. It is caused by a particular strain of Newcastle disease virus, called PPMV-1 (Pigeon Paramyxovirus type 1). This disease mainly attacks the nervous system and kidneys of the bird, which explains the diversity of the signs observed. It can affect an isolated pigeon or quickly decimate an entire dovecote or dovecote, particularly in unvaccinated birds. In Tunisia as elsewhere, it represents a serious concern for breeders of racing and meat pigeons.

The first signs are often discreet: the bird drinks and urinates much more than usual, its droppings become very liquid and greenish.
Then characteristic nervous disorders appear: the head twists to the side or backwards (torticollis), the pigeon turns in circles, loses its balance, trembles or makes “pedaling” movements with its legs.
Some subjects can no longer fly or stand up, others have partial paralysis of their wings or legs.
The appetite decreases significantly and the bird loses weight, especially if it is no longer able to swallow properly due to neurological disorders.
The severity and combination of symptoms vary greatly from one individual to another, making diagnosis by eye sometimes misleading.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by an avian paramyxovirus type 1 (strain adapted to pigeons, noted PPMV-1), related to the Newcastle disease virus of poultry.
The virus is transmitted very easily between pigeons by direct contact, but also indirectly via contaminated droppings, drinking water, food, dovecote equipment or the hands and clothing of the breeder.
Pigeon gatherings (competitions, markets, overcrowded dovecotes) encourage rapid diffusion between birds.
Overcrowded or poorly ventilated dovecotes, lack of vaccination, the introduction of new birds without quarantine and lack of hygiene greatly increase the risk.
Young pigeons and birds weakened by other diseases or stress (transport, competition) are more vulnerable.
Contact with stray or wild pigeons, common in Tunisian urban areas, constitutes a source of contamination that is difficult to control.
Transmission
The virus is transmitted directly between pigeons through respiratory secretions and droppings, and indirectly through contaminated water, food, equipment or hands.
Wild or stray pigeons can introduce the virus into even a well-managed loft.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the history of the pigeon loft (clustered cases, mortality, lack of vaccination) and on clinical observation of typical nervous and digestive disorders.
Laboratory analyzes (search for the virus by PCR, serological tests) make it possible to confirm the diagnosis and differentiate it from other causes of nervous disorders such as poisoning or deficiencies.
A post-mortem examination can be offered on dead birds to guide the diagnosis in an affected flock.
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment capable of eliminating this virus.
Treatment is essentially supportive: rehydration, appropriate nutritional intake and a calm environment for affected birds.
Antibiotics may be prescribed by the veterinarian to prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections which often worsen the condition.
Vaccination of still healthy birds in the dovecote is an essential measure as soon as cases are detected, in addition to isolation measures.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular vaccination of all pigeons in the loft is the most effective means of prevention and is strongly recommended by avian veterinarians, especially for racing and competition pigeons.
Good hygiene in the dovecote (regular cleaning and disinfection, management of droppings) limits the persistence of the virus in the environment.
Any new acquisition must be isolated in quarantine for several weeks before joining the group.
Avoiding contact with stray pigeons or pigeons of unknown health status also reduces the risk of introducing the virus.
Vaccination
A specific inactivated vaccine against pigeon paramyxovirus exists and is widely used in racing and competition pigeons.
Primary vaccination of the young followed by regular boosters, according to the protocol recommended by the veterinarian, is the best protection for the dovecote.
Vaccination is particularly recommended before any gathering period (competitions, exhibitions) where the risk of contact with infected birds is high.
Possible complications
Nervous disorders can become permanent in certain birds even after apparent recovery, notably torticollis.
Severe kidney damage can set in and permanently weaken the bird.
Digestive or respiratory bacterial superinfections are common and worsen the prognosis.
In unvaccinated flocks, mortality can affect a large part of the colony.
When to see a veterinarian
One or more pigeons in the loft are turning in circles, have twisted heads or are losing their balance.
Abnormally liquid and greenish droppings appear in several birds at the same time.
A sudden drop in appetite or fitness affects several pigeons from the same flock.
Unexplained deaths occur in the dovecote, especially if the birds are not vaccinated.
Prognosis
The prognosis varies depending on the severity of the nervous signs and the general condition of the bird at the time of treatment.
Some pigeons recover gradually over several weeks, sometimes with discreet and permanent nervous after-effects such as a slight residual stiff neck.
Others, particularly young people or very affected people, may not survive despite treatment.
Early vaccination of the rest of the loft clearly improves the overall prognosis of the breeding.
Frequently asked questions
Can a vaccinated pigeon still get paramyxovirus?
Vaccination greatly reduces the risk and severity of the disease, but it does not guarantee 100% absolute protection, especially if boosters are not up to date.
Can the pigeon recover completely?
Some pigeons recover well, but nervous after-effects such as a slight stiff neck can persist for a long time in others.
Should the entire dovecote be isolated in case of suspicion?
Yes, isolating sick birds and limiting entries and exits from the dovecote is essential to limit the spread while you consult a veterinarian.
Does this disease also affect chickens or humans?
The pigeon strain is related to the Newcastle virus of poultry and can sometimes affect them, but it is not considered a significant human disease.
