Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a condition documented in grey whales (Eschrichtius robustus), large migratory cetaceans that feed by filtering sediments rich in small benthic invertebrates. As the animal ingests these prey, it may take in roundworm larvae that then establish themselves in the digestive tract. This disease is extremely difficult to study in such a large ocean-dwelling animal: most knowledge comes from observations made on stranded carcasses.
